“last day of holiday spoilt”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

we are two mature women who stayed for one night on a friday after driving down from dornock.
after checking the local places to eat, we decided it would be more comfortable to have a bar meal at the hotel. our order choice was from the specials board, were then told 15 mins later that the chef had run out of it, so ordered two three egg omlets, after twenty minutes had to ask where they were, receptionist and waitress could not understand the clock/waiting time. received a small poorly made dish after 50 minutes of the first order.in the morning the receptioist who could under stand us was not at all interested. on the way home, we stopped at some services and received better cutomer service there.( the room that we had, the towel rail was over the toilet, there were plenty of black marks round the shower and the windows. bar area needs cleaning, dirty windows and pictures.) we also found it strange that we had to pay before actually seeing our room.
if this had been the start of our holiday, then this would of spoilt it. the next time we are around arrochar, then we will be going to a proper bed and breakfast.

Hotel is set on Lochlong with great views, unfortunately the welcome was not great, food was basic but the bedroom was good. No Mangement presence over the whole weekend, I expected a warm welcome , good food & friendly service not a lot to ask for when your paying for the service

Over the years we have stayed in many hotels/guest houses and our experience has been that payment would normally be expected on departure. There would be an expected level of trust on the hoteliers part. This was not the reality when visiting the Arrochar Hotel. It seemed slightly odd and somewhat disconcerting that payment was expected from the outset.......once we got to the room, I fully understand why. By taking the payment first they then got away with not addressing any of the many issues found within the room. We found:
* the light above the bed was not working
* some sticky discoloured substance on the door frame of the bathroom
* the duvet had not been put in the quilt cover properly and so had to do this myself
* the toilet pan still had some faecal matter on it
* the shower temperature was not consistent, it went between, very warm or really cold.
* the kettle smelled of vomit, apparently the previous resident had boiled milk in the kettle. It had not been washed and had been left sitting in a extremely warm room and had more than turned, so you can only image the smell coming from it. Which surprisingly or not, housekeeping did not notice. There was also a smell of soured milk in the living area of the room.
* the smell did not get any better as the heating within the room remained on full regardless of the temperature outside and there seemed no way to control it.
On departure we raised the issues with the staff at the front desk, this was met with quite a non plussed response from the receptionist. The most we got was 'awwh sorry, I will let house keeping know.' followed by a stare. There was no sincere apology or discussion on anything compensatory being offered. Hey, they already had our money so they weren't caring.
This all explains why you pay as you arrive. all in all I was really disappointed as the hotel was recommended by friends
Needless to say we will not be back!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

Sir , many thanks for your comments. I am sorry for your discomfort and will take the appropriate action to ensure this does not occur again.
My receptionist has never encountered milk being boiled in a kettle and this may have triggered a stunned reaction.
The heating is on a central control but can also be adjusted locally. I will check to ensure this system is working properly.
It is standard practice here to take payment on arrival.
My apologies once again.

Regards

We stayed three nights in May 2014. Floorboards creak a bit and if you have a room near to the stairwell, then expect some noise from the fire door opening and closing. Other than that very good value.

The restaurant staff were very pleasant and helpful as were reception staff.

When trying to get served at the bar we thought we had become invisible.

Room Tip: Hotel backs onto the main road, so quieter rooms at the front.

We wanted somewhere dog friendly for a nights stop over on the way to the Isle of Skye so picked this hotel because of its location. We were slightly worried because of some of the negative reviews but when we arrived Yvonne the receptionist could not have been more welcoming. The communal areas of the hotel are great, with a big open plan bar and seating area. The room was a little tired, but perfectly clean and comfortable and for the price we were very happy with it. There is a great little fish and chip shop just around the corner which we visited for our evening meal after walking our dogs along the side of the loch and the breakfast next morning was very good. We would be more than happy to visit again.

The hotel is in need of some updating, as I have read in previous reviews, but it is very good value for money. I stayed with my family last weekend and we all enjoyed it, the breakfast is great, with quite a lot of choice of both hot and cold food (including haggis!). The views from the front of the hotel are stunning (it is on the edge of Loch Long, with hills all around) and it is a great base for looking around the area. We had dinner at the hotel one night (from the bar menu) and although the choice was a bit limited, it was fresh and tasty. Rooms were clean and comfortable. The entertainment on Saturday night was enjoyable and unexpected - A singer, scottish dancing and bagpipe players!

Stayed the start of June. Room was fine, clean, quiet and comfortable. Front desk staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help. Restaurant staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was good. The best thing was the amazing views over the loch and onto the forest and hills. The bedroom window and the view from the dining room looked right up onto the Cobbler, one of the most dramatic views you could ask for!

Will most certainly be back.
