“Amazing views and quality chill out time!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2011

We stayed for 3 nights at portnellan in a 4 star lodge. Accomodation was great, all lodges well spaced out so real feeling of privacy with a truly amazing view of surrounding lochs and mountains. We could hear bagpipes in the background when moving in! Everyone was really helpful and welcoming, even when we asked twice for adjustments to be made to the complimentary tandem bike hire to fit my daughter. Plenty to do in the surrounding area, driving through some impressive countryside to get there. We will definitely be back!

I booked up to spend a weekend at Portnellan for my boyfriend's 30th birthday - what a fantastic decision. Living only an hour or so away in Glasgow I had no idea how blown away we would be by the scenery! Can't say enough good things about the place: the scenery was beautiful, the site itself was lovely and the manager Cameron who we met on arrival and when we checked out could not have been more helpful, offering us alternative routes home to see some more scenery and dropping by the lodge once we had settled in to see that everything was ok.

We stayed in the 5* Raven lodge and I have to say we felt very lucky!! The view from the patio outside the lodge was unbelievable and definately one of the best onsite! The lodge was spotlessly clean and was well equipt with everything we needed.

The only thing which could have been better was the unpredictable Scottish weather and even that didnt stop us having fun - we will definately book another trip soon!

Your host at Portnealln is Cameron, he is friendly, helpful and goes out his way to ensure your stay is a good one. It was more than that, it was fabulous, from the stunning view and tranquility to the facilities. As a family we are used to self catering in Italy, (bring your own loo roll and dish towels), our lodge, Heron, overflowed with home from home comforts, we even managed to use the Barbeque. We had the usual Scottish Weather of four seasons in one day but it was all covered, as you can avail yourslef of any number of games or DVD's from the reception when the Scottish weather does its thing and inbetween the showers make use of the free bikes, boats or canoes. Our last night saw the arrival of a piper and his dog, who roamed from lodge to lodge playing his pipes, it would bring a tear to a glass eye. We will definetely be back, cant recommend it highly enough

Yes. I agree.

As the Spring and early Summer arrive, every year brings another wave of natural beauty. Between, the widlife, the plants and shrubs and the trees year by year just keep maturing. It's a bonnie spot.

Look forward to seeing you again sometime soon.

Having visited Portnellan many times over the last 8 years for family holidays, hen weekends and much needed 'get away from it all' weekends I would thoroughly recommend it. The accommodation and location is first class but what makes Portnellan stand out from the crowd is the first class service provided by Cameron and Elaine Taylor. Well worth a visit!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2011

Me and five of my friends stayed in the Gamekeeper lodge (4*) for 3 nights at the end of April. We had an amazing time! The setting was absolutely beautiful. It looked lovely even though the weather wasn't fantastic when we were there (it wasn't bad either right enough) so I can imagine that in the summer time it would be absolutely amazing.

The cabin was very clean, comfortable (especially the beds) and well appointed. Kitchen was great. I was very pleased to find a dishwasher! This is a luxury I do not have at home.
Decent electric shower and large-ish bath. The living room had glass sliding doors that lead out on to the patio, where there was a barbecue. BBQ gas was free.

Oh and Sky TV too... but why watch TV when you've come all the way out here!?

There was a wee reception hut not far from our cabin... this was open 24 hours a day and had loads of stuff for borrowing (free) eg/ games, movies, books, bikes, fishing rods, paddles for the canoes etc... There was also a load of stuff you could buy, such as beer, wine, snacks, bird feed, toiletries, etc etc... The system in place was an honesty box, which I thought was nice. There was a nice laid back atmosphere about the place which we all appreciated.

Our time at Portnellan was mostly spent attempting to fish (we did get 2 trout... but along the road at Loch Rusky... and by we, I mean my friend Stuart), having barbecues and drinking nice whiskey (a lot of) on the patio, walking down by the lochs (beautiful and peaceful), and canoeing/boating.

There are some canoes and boats down by the loch (5 mins from the cabin) and it's pretty casual, you can just borrow them as you please. You can sail out to the wee island in the middle of the loch... and there are some ruins of a castle there. Very pretty. We sat and relaxed in the sun with some whiskey here. We also found some geese eggs in a nest in the ruins... and shortly after got told to bolt by mama goose. Lots of fun.

It's a really good place if you really want to get away but don't have a car... because the town is not far and Cameron offers lifts or you could take a taxi. Also, I was worried about the place being too 'manicured' and feeling a bit too much like a holiday park, however there really isn't that feeling at all.

I wanted to give a mention to Cameron who runs the place... he was a very good host and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Very approachable, friendly and helpful. Made our stay that much more enjoyable.

Will DEFINITELY be coming back to this wee spot! Hopefully in the summer! Go, you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Well I can definitely recommend the one we staye

We stayed in Portnellan at the end of April and to sum it all up it was "EXCELLENT" Cameron, his father and the rest of the team Colin etc where great. Couldnt be more helpful. We went canoeing on Loch Dochart to which Colin sorted out all the canoes/equipement that we needed and told us teh best route to take to get to the loch's island and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day, to top it all off we had chance to explore the castle ruines located on the Loch Dochart island which was really interesting. The walk up the neighbouring mountain is a good day trip with breathtaking views. If your just after a quiet time away or a time filled with activities then this is the place to go - Great location, Great staff. We will be returning in a few months time to do it all again.

My husband and I stayed in Buzzard with another couple over New Year. The lodge was well equiped, cozy and a great place to see in the New Year with friends. The views from the lodge were superb and we loved watching the beautiful wee birds feeding outside. We had intended to go down to see Cameron's bonfire and fireworks after midnight but the walking, talking, eating and drinking had taken its toll !!!!

Thank you, Mr and Mrs Munro and friends, for your kind words. As far as not making it down to the fireworks and bonfire. I completely understand. Buzzard has such a magnificent elevated position on the hillside, you would have had a great view of the fireworks from the comfort of your lodge....Once again thank you for your custom (and patience whilst we completed Buzzard's refurbishment). I hope you enjoyed the new facilities. 'Til next time. Cameron.
