“Extremely disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

We checked into this hotel at 5.30pm and reserved a dinner slot for 6.45pm. On arriving in our top floor room we could not believe how incredibly small it was. The room was dated and as a whole the hotel could do with a face lift and some TLC. Further more the pillowcases were stained and the carpet had coins on it so had clearly not been vacuumed. We decided to stay for dinner however this was equally disappointing and we struggled to eat the meal. When we returned to our room we decided we would be far more comfortable at home and decided to check out before 8pm. The staff were attentive during the meal and apologetic at check out but the room was not to a standard I would have be comfortable staying in. With a bit of work this hotel could be beautiful but in this case we found it to be sadly lacking.

Room Tip: Absolutely not room 309

From the first glimpse of this impressive mansion we knew we were in for a lovely overnight stay. Stunning scenery and so peaceful. We travelled on a day were the weather was rain and gales and couldn't have asked for a nicer location to snuggle in with a lovely glass of bubbly and the best of food. Top marks to the chef! Bedroom and en-suite was massive with beautiful views over the countryside. Staff were attentive and polite. Perfect for a relaxing break away from it all. If it's night-life your looking for you will be disappointed. The only couple of wee down sides, if you could call it that was- it would be nice if there were more pics of the house on the walls and if more rooms were open to see the beautiful original features.

We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Not sure what other rooms are like, but I asked for one with a good view and wasn't disappointed...

Spent a stormy night at the hotel. Excellent value for B&B plus dinner. The building is spectacular, and we enjoyed exploring the grounds. The staff are very friendly in a relaxed and informal way. It's definitely a bit "different" from other hotels - for example, I couldn't see a bar, although beer and wine were readily available to those who asked for it. Very peaceful atmosphere, and perfect for a relaxing winter break.

Went on a DBB basis, on an Itison deal.

Firstly pluses:-
fantastic staff, can't do enough for you, and all very pleasant
inside has been kept up well, with fresh paint and walls, (but tired carpets)
large room, comfy bed, fantastic view
whole hotel is spotlessly clean
great breakfast

Minuses:-
interior let down by old carpets everywhere, and dated, broken suspended ceilings (in parts of the restaurant and bar area)
no bar, as such
lounge could be wonderful, but laid out like an old folks home
christmas dinner pretty dire...... overcooked veg, and Farmfoods stuffing balls, and worse than that, my wife ordered cheese and biscuits, and the biscuits were a pack of chocolate chip cookies

In fairness, the Gartmore does not profess to be a hotel, rather it is rather nice hostel, with lots of events happening in the background, so three blobs for the great staff and fantastic housekeeping. Definitely fails as a hotel however.

Room Tip: Family rooms at the back of the hotel - incredible view - second floor

Just returned from our second yearly stay and had, once again, a fantastic stay. Everything we could possibly need was provided. Could do with a tweek here and there on the decorating front, windows etc., but was comfy, clean and warm. Was decorated with Xmas tree and tinsel, so a lovely welcome!! A great retreat for family groups or friends.

Spent 5 days on a crafting break. Food was superb. Great choices and superb service. Rooms .clean and comfortable. Staff very friendly and met our every need. Can't recommend this venue enough for a great break in an ideal country setting. Large comfortable lounge and a log fire. Lots of period features. Great grounds to walk in

Room Tip: Every room I saw was well appointed and there is a lift which is a bonus for luggage and less able...

Autumn in all it's glory!Arriving on a beautiful Friday evening. Our welcome was just as if we had arrived at a friend's country house
My room was delightful and well furnished with everything I needed
Super shower and comfy bed just what is needed for a relaxing weekend
The food at each meal was excellent .saturday afternoon gave us a fantastic indoor activity programme as it was pelting down outside ...who cared as we had a choice of painting group ,nail bar ,keep fit , drama workshop or a snooze
Saturday evening was a Night at the Proms...well by the time we got to Land of Hope and Glory we all were on a high!!!
What a joy and a delight the staff were ,friendly willing and so well mannered but fun
I shall return

Room Tip: Try to get one with a view of the valley towards Stirling Castle
