What a fabulous experience. Sensitively conserved and stunningly beautiful. Each room is full of intricate detail, tiny insets to gorgoeus swoops and whorls. You are free to wander, the only request to use neither one's mobile phone nor to take photographs. Rennie Mackintosh designed the house for Blackie - so it was great fun to spot Blakcie's Books for Boys under the stairs in the son's not-so-secret hideaway.

Stop for scones and tea - the cheese and oatcakes are yummy too and there is a shop of Mackintosh associated bits and bobs down the stairs plus a shop showcasing the work of local and not so local artists - all for sale.

The grounds are beautifully maintained and worth a wander, in between rain showers. A lovely visit. Oh! and the lampposts in the lane leading to the hosue are all rigged out in Mackintosh style. Great fun

We were completely fascinated by this gem of an 'Art Nouveau' house which the National Trust for Scotland is continuing to maintain much as it was created by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret. For those in wheelchairs there is only access to the ground floor but even in those rooms they can see the way art and functionality were so well incorporated into the design. Upstairs the Edwardian shower (more like an iron maiden) was just as interesting as the bedrooms. After touring the house we took time to enjoy the beautiful gardens and to rest for a while in the wild garden.

The Hill House in Helensburgh (west coast of Scotland) is a truly remarkable piece of architecture and interior design by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who was a Glaswegian. The house is just beautiful to look at: there is little symmetry in the architecture, with windows and doors placed at different levels, which makes viewing it a very pleasing experience. The building looks larger than it actually is once your inside. The inside was designed by Mackintosh (along with his wife Margaret McDonald Mackintosh) with the purpose of bringing a holistic approach to architecture and interior design, both complementing each other. This works exceptionally well, and you can't help but feel slightly awe struck by what is achieved. Both the exterior and interior have a wonderfully understated elegance to them (rather like an Audi car). We particularly liked the stunning drawing room: it's simplicity of design is thrilling to experience. The design of the fireplace in particular is wonderful. But the rest of the house is also quite simply marvelous. Mackintosh and his wife draw you into their designs and you feel they must have loved every moment of design.
The staff make your visit even more enjoyable. They are approachable, knowledgeable and engaging. Well done all of them :)
If you like architecture and interior design, the you must visit the Hill House. It's a unique building by two Scottish geniuses.

Very interesting house to visit. Staff there will very helpful, although no guided tours. Would be helpful if there was a audio tour rather than having to read a brochure in each room.
