Riva for the price this is not 4 star

Arrival. So unorganised , apparently the male staff member couldn't take my card payment, so I had to pop back later .
No one sat on the reception desk.

We had booked for 2 nights for meals informing the staff on arrival we had a dog so they knew we were to sit in the dog friendly area.

The room was not clean, very small and no wardrobe only a small open shelf to hang clothes on. The large mirror was dangerously placed against a wall, a big health and safety issue. The rooms were either freezing or too hot and the corridor outside our room was like the artic. The shower door didn't close properly but again the bath room was soo cold. Very uncomfortable I'm surprised this low temperature is allowed .
The toilet roll was only half a roll for 2 nights and was so thin. We did ask for more the next day and staff had to go searching.
There was a record player on the dressing table taking up space but no meaning as to why it was there.
A bottle of water without the top on is unygenic.
No mini fridge or safe as standards state for a 4 star hotel. However this hotel should be between a 3 star max.

Sat night meal , very quiet. Carbonara was so think and not creamy . Garlic bread was too slices of loaf that had a garlic clove pressed into it and was hardly cooked.
Pudding- sticky toffee wasn't even hot the sauce wasn't melted , I didn't eat that and told the staff when our plates were collected.
As throughout the meal not one person asked if things were OK and no offer of drinks
We did meet Colin the night porter and he is an asset to the team, he is so friendly and helpful. You can tell he has a number of years experience working in hospitality . Both nights he was very pleasant.

We had temporarily misplaced our room key and Daniel kindly gave up a replacement but it said room 12.
Then the next morning I overheard the friendly female (sun morn breakfast) say to a customer she was looking for the room 12 key for him to move into.
I explained we may have it.
But again a hotel with no safe has keys that fit all doors ? How unsafe .

Sunday
Breakfast not bad but toast was like concrete , how can toast get so hard if it's made fresh or had it been standing for days.

Came back in the afternoon for a coffee and again asked if we could be sat in the dog friendly area as we had reserved. This we were told was fine.
Evening meal'- surprisingly no table for us so the male staff member told us to sit at the table set for 5, I double checked this with him and he said yes.
We were left sitting for a long time before someone came to serve us, yet the female with long dark hair Sat and played on snapchat on her phone on the reception desk.
We did get served as asked if we wanted food I had booked !
When we placed our order the female staff member who had been on her phone came and asked us if we would move to the restaurant. I said we have the dog and we had a booking and were told to sit there.
Then every single member of staff , even the chefs popped there head around the corner at different times to look at us, this was very uncomfortable when it was your error in the first place. There seems to be no communication at all with the staff.

The meal arrived I had steak, I asked for it well done but further into it , it was pink and fatty and I didn't eat it. The chunky chips were oven thick chips and were mot cooked properly. The other meal was chicken burger served luke warm and with sauces not documented on the menu. Did you check on our allergies?? No.
When we went to pay the staff said we had paid as it was marked off, we were honest and said no we haven't paid.
How unprofessional and how much money are you losing if this happens regularly.

The staff were getting so many customers drinks wrong and having such attitude with them it is very poor to observe.
There was a DJ on that was basically just music playing and he counted down the new year, the music was too loud and no customer interaction.
As again no staff members chat to the customers.

Monday breakfast
How appalling. We had the small Scottish breakfast with scrambled egg. I can't believe how lazy the chef was. It was clear he had prepped the food hours before on grill as our scrambled eggs were fried eggs chopped up as the orange yolk and the white of the fried egg were mashed together, with the clear slime on top that wasn't even cooked. How lazy..
The sausages were so hard and the toast again was like concrete.
We do have photos of the food .

Looking around the restaurant that morning it was so dirty, long blonde hair extensions wrapped around chair legs, glass on the floor which my dog got in his mouth, dirt on the tables.

No housekeeping in our rooms on either day and night we were there.
Food laid on trays in the corridors for the whole day.

When we checked out again no one was on the desk , this also meant anyone could enter the room areas .

Room tip: Lots to see in the area

Just got back from our stay with our dog. Had a room on the front looking out over the water. Breakfast was really good and the bed was comfortable. Only disappointment was having no room key. This took an age to sort but the maintenance man jumped in where the staff struggled. With seemingly no communication between the staff, Dee was fantastic on our last morning listening to us and making sure we departed happy

Room tip: Views from the front are worth the extra

Location:
About 5 mins from Helensburgh Lower.
About 15 minutes from Helensburgh Upper but the good news is it is a downslope walk and gets flatter towards the town centre. No tricky steps or cobblestones.
Surrounded by many dining and shopping options. Premium rooms will have a view of the sea.
Facilities:
No lift. Liquid shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and handwash provided in dispenser bottles. Fan and hangers in the room. Very conveniently has a gastropub downstairs.
Room:
Rooms 1 to 8 are on the 1st floor, the rest are on the higher floors.
Rooms 1 to 3 are clustered towards the front of the building. Along the corridor is Room 5, leading to another cluster of Rooms 6 to 8.
Stylish décor. Clean.
Just about enough space for a big suitcase. Very high ceiling though, so still feels spacious.
Service:
Very friendly and helpful.
