“Real Ale”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2012

We were staying at the Drimsynie Estate Lodges and decided to go out for lunch early in the week. We found that the Shore House Inn was closed Mon & Tues so walked on to the Lochgoilhead Hotel. (another review) We returned Friday lunchtime to the Shore House Inn with our 2 year old granddaughter and her parents. The staff were friendly and accommodating to our party. We had a variety of items off the menu - spag bol for the little one, handmade pizza, home made quiche, tagliatelle and steak and all were excellent. Home made cheesecake and lemon meringue and local ice creams to follow. The highlight to the male members of the party being the Fyne real ale. The view from the restaurant is spectacular with ever changing scenery and there were table cloths on the tables.

Perfection. We stayed in a room overlooking the Loch, because of the location of the house, the view was spectacular. Everything was kept clean, the furnishings in the room were classy. All the staff were friendly, helpful and personal.

One day we went fishing and actually caught a mackerel. The chef cooked it up for us no problem. Very accommodating and the personal touch is nice.

Should I return to Lochgoilhead, and I intend to, I would go straight to The Shore House Inn. Perfect location, it's not a huge place so it is quite peaceful and relaxing. The menu (and food) in the restaurant was great. Have the Guinness & Steak Pie.

Room Tip: Get the room/s overlooking the loch.

Every thing you could want from a traditional Inn, good food, good bear and great company. Too many hours spent proping up the bar with Mark. The scrambeld eggs in the moring were also marvelous.

I booked a 3 night stay on the spur of the moment last week, staying from Thursday night till Sunday and it turned out to be the most peaceful and relaxing break I've had for years. The views were beautiful, my room was lovely, the food was good and the welcome was warm. I enjoyed myself so much that I've just booked another 3 nights in July!

The setting couldn't be prettier, it is wonderful and the room was very nicely presented too.

The wood-fired pizza was also very nice, but the other menu items were nicely presented but lacked taste. Breakfast was nicely cooked. I just got the feeling this was cash and carry food, not local ingredients which is always a little disappointing. I could be wrong though.

The owners were friendly and Gillian in particular worked ever so hard to please. I was pleased to find real ale on sale too, that swayed my decision to book.

Now for the downside:

1. Sticky tables in the restaurant and tatty public areas.

Yuk! So sticky your glass has to be pulled off the table and your arms stick to the surface. Remained sticky even after I mentioned this; I was told "it's the detergent", but it doesn't take much to wipe it off with a damp cloth, the staff seemed to accept it as a fact of life rather than doing something about it.

The dining room needed cleaning ine general, but more so the bar which probably looked far worse than it really was due to it having an old worn out carpet held together with copious amounts of black gaffer tape across it.

2. Drunken teenagers in a lewd, violent alcohol fuelled stupor.

My Saturday afternoon was spoiled by this, so was that of several other adults on the terrace including all the other guests I spoke with. Some teenagers who looked marginal in terms of age were served by owner Mark. He repeatedly served them huge amounts of alcohol even when they were clearly far too drunk to continue serving which he clearly saw for himself as he was clearing glasses and saw the individuals. I complained to him later and was particularly annoyed when he lied about the situation saying he only saw the boys who weren't so drunk, not the girls who were worse; this was blatantly untrue. The outcome was that eventually the police became involved.

I appreciate they spent a lot at the bar and perhaps Mark needed the income, but he showed a very poor judgement and it upset all the residents. We all spoke about it together that evening and were all appalled.

Overall, it's a lovely spot and I think Mark and Gillian once did wonderful things there, but they seem to have fallen out with it and just be biding their time until the can move on. It's a shame as actually they're really nice hosts. I get the feeling the place hasn't fared well financially and Mark wants out so their hearts are not in it now. Gillian still tries really hard but is clearly tired.

I feel very guilty about providing such a mixed review, but I think it's important to be honest and tell it like it is. I would actually go back again, I enjoyed it, but it could have been much better and the Saturday afternoon teenagers/alcohol/violence/Police saga shocked a lot of people there and was distressing for some, embarrassing for others.

Room Tip: Get the best room possible, don't try to save money on a room without a fabulous view.

Thank you for taking time to submit a review. The positive comments you made reflect the general opinion of the majority of our customers.
I would like to address the negatives
1. 'Sticky tables and tatty public areas' - Yes, we have recently had a problem with the table surfaces becoming sticky due the sanitizer spray reacting with the table varnish. We were aware of the problem and as of last week (sadly just after you left) we are using tablecloths until we have time to resurface the tables. The carpet in the bar is not actually 'old and worn ' but has shrunk with steam cleaning and again, as a temporary measure, the tape is there to prevent tripping on the open seam.
2. Drunken teenagers - This was a totally isolated and extremely unusual situation. Of the two young couples the men were not teenagers and they came in and bought drinks from the bar and took them outside. Mark was not serving in the bar until 3pm as he had been off the premises collecting real ale from our local brewery. When he collected glasses the four of them were chatting and laughing and were not in an 'alcohol fuelled stupor'. He only became alerted that there was a problem when a customer came in and said one of the young women had been left and was not well. The police were not called to our premises regarding this incident but were apparently called after the group moved on towards Drimsynie Hotel. We are sorry your enjoyment of the sunny afternoon was marred by this situation and thankful that it is not normal for Shore House patrons to cause distress to others.
We have worked hard over the last eight years to build a great little business which is now for sale because we want to do other things. It is no secret that we would like to sell the Shore House and develop our other businesses in the area, but your speculation about our states of mind is just not appropriate and your inference that our business 'hasn't fared well financially' is inaccurate and making public comments like this is quite offensive.

Found The Shore House Inn on the web almost by chance and spent a really enjoyable three day mid week break there last week. We were made very welcome and our spacious, comfortable bedroom had a wonderful view right down the loch. The atmosphere in the restaurant was relaxing and the food of a very high standard and presentation. Everyone was very helpful and Gillian had information about the local history and local places to visit. Altogether a gem of a find!!

An unexpected change to some previously laid plans led us to book a 2 night getaway near our home in Glasgow. After surfing the web for a short time, we came across The Shore House in Lochgoilhead. It turned out to be a great selection!

Despite being only an hour and a half from Glasgow, it was the first time I'd been to Lochgoilhead. What a wonderful village! Beautiful views down the loch, and a sleepy, welcoming feel about it.

The Shore House proved to be a great base from which to enjoy the village. The welcome was a friendly one, and we were shown to our room with the minimum of fuss. Our room was clean and spacious, and enjoyed a wonderful view of the water. The en-suite facilities were first rate.
Downstairs, the small bar offered ales and a wide range of single malt scotch whiskies. The restaurant was casual and relaxed, and once again took advantage of those great views. The food was excellent (I really enjoyed the sea bass!).

We were told that the grassy terrace leading from the hotel down to the lochside gets pretty busy during the summer. I can imagine why. Its a perfect setting.

We will certainly be paying a return visit to The Shore House in the very near future, and I suppose that's as good a recommendation as I can give!!
