“Fantastic location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

This hotel has a wonderful outlook over the Lake of Menteith in Central Scotland. Not far from Edinburgh or Glasgow it is easily accessible yet offers a wonderful rural location with wildlife in abundance. The view of the lake is uninterrupted from the hotel bar and dining room. Stayed for one night and had dinner then breakfast in a room overlooking the water, a great experience. Weather was brilliant so there was an opportunity to sit outside and watch the Osprey taking fish from the lake Meals were very good indeed and breakfast hearty with good quality ingredients. Staff were very pleasant at all times with smiles and attentive interest. It is an old hotel so expect creaky floors and the odd bit of flaking paint but everything worked and there was plenty of hot water. Definitely a place to spend more than one night in and somewhere I would return to.

Room Tip: Lake view is worthwhile but the rooms overlooking hills have their own impressive views.

Dear Brude
Thank you for your kind words and delighted you enjoyed your experience. We are indeed so lucky to enjoy such a wonderful yet accesible location, right on the water. No matter the weather, the view is awesome. But we do our best not to take this for granted and ensure we deliver food and service to match.

We spent a lovely relaxing few days at this beautiful spot on the Lake, the weather wasn't very kind to us but it didn't matter.

The staff were lovely and friendly with nothing too much trouble.

The hotel is very quaint with a good mix of old and contemporary furniture and fittings which worked very well together.

We loved the whisky room and marvelled at all the wonderful vintage whiskies to choose from!

On arrival we asked if there were any Lake View rooms available but unfortunately for us the hotel was fully booked.
We had a classic room on the ground floor which was comfortable and modern, I particularly liked the roman blinds at the windows and the decor. There was also a wonderful tray of "Scottish goodies" with Tunnocks tea cakes, caramel wafers, fresh coffee and and array of teas.
All in all a nice touch.

However the bathroom was a big disappointment which was a pity especially as the bedroom was so nice. The lighting was poor and the shower screen had seen better days (It had mould on the bottom of it) and the shower wasn't great.

The lovely complimentary afternoon cream tea was a delight. It was so relaxing to sit in the bar/lounge area beside the roaring log fire watching the fishermen on the Lake whilst enjoying the delicious scones.

(There is a private residents lounge but I have to agree with other reviewers that it was rather dark and not very welcoming.)

The evening meals were spot on, beautifully cooked and presented. The mussels were the best I've tasted and the pork belly was delicious, as were all the meals.
Breakfast was good, especially the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, delicious and plentiful.

This was a gift from our family as they know we like to take numerous short breaks in Scotland throughout the year and like to try good quality small hotels. They were happy to learn that we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Thank you for sharing your experience and delighted you enjoyed your experience. We try to offer a range of delights to tease your senses from the Tunnocks goodies, rare and tasty malts, bathroom TUB range and much more. The lounge you refer to is our second "hidden" residents only lounge so yes it is tucked away and quite deliberately. Again our thanks and we look forward to your return.

We dined here today, with elderly parents, in some glorious sunshine. The setting is simply stunning at the side of the Lake of Mentieth and the ancient priory. Several diners asked to sit outside, and the courteous staff obliged willingly. As many other reviews have mentioned..the mussels are amazing, the traditional haddock & chips very scrumptious & there were several 'specials' available too, including lamb & seabass. We were very spoiled by the staff, nothing too much trouble despite the holiday weekend peak trade.. Would highly recommend this lovely restaurant & would plan to stay over in the hotel next time!

Many thanks for your kind words and generous comments. Even if the sun does not shine our views are world beating. Delighted you enjoyed your lunch, we are blessed with great produce to work with and some talented folks in the kitchen to cook it sympathetically. Our specials are always last minute and the best of what Dan can find from suppliers that day. We look forward to your return and when you do try our Lesiure Break, great value that includes your dinner.

This was our first visit for the whole weekend, we ha da family gathering,

From the moment we arrived Joan and the team looked after us, it felt as if a family were running the hotel, so friendly and personal. nothign was too m uch trouble.

Chris, Amy, Lilly, Bunty, staff members made sure my glass was never empty, I must had had at least 20 Bloody Marys, which were out of this world.

We ate in the bar for lunch, fantastic, and in the eveing in the restaurant the mussels were to die for. ( a fanhtcasic wine list as well)

We chose a Classic room, which was cozy, clean fresh, and so quiet, lovely soft beds,

Wil be back

Thank you all for a fantastic weekend

Dear Carl
Thank you so much for your kind words and we were delighted to look after your party, all great fun. We do have a fabulous team here, many long serving and they certainly know how to make a mean Bloody Mary, as you know. Next time try the Cosmos or one of Amy's specials. Thank you for choosing "The Lake" and we look forward to seeing you again.

This hotel is so much MORE than professional. Friendly, welcoming staff in every way. The beautiful rooms and perfect views is shown in all pictures. The warm friendliness of the staff is the bonus which makes the place perfect. The good towels, bathrobes and high quality toiletries are all appreciated, but the service of the staff is what makes it a gem.
The hotel was completely full this time we were here. Still breakfast and dinner was served quickly and with a smile.
We knew we would arrive far too late for dinner, and asked for some sandwiches upon arrival - and a pile of very good sandwiches was waiting for us. Highly appreciated after looong working day, flight etc.
We just love this place - and will of course be back!!

Room Tip: Even the more pricey rooms are well worth the extra money. But choose according to wallet. Our fav h...

After a gruelling few weeks in work, this was such a find. The weather may not have been wonderful, nevertheless the views in the rain were splendid. The ambience was tranquil even the very youngest of guests did not make much noise or if they did their considerate parents took them to less public areas. The staff could not have been more helpful and presented very well - all very genuine in their comments. The room, spotless. The food excellent. The fire in the bar was lovely although it became very hot in the bar on the evening we chose to eat there. The restaurant, menu as for the bar, was delightful with great views over the lake. This is definitely the place to come for peace, tranquillity and relaxation. (Would agree with another reviewer's comment about the residents' lounge which seemed to lack something!). My friend and I will be back. Thank you all

This was the first time we had been here, and we had a lovely stay. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. The room was spotlessly clean, and the hospitality tray was well stocked! We enjoyed our complimentary tea and scones both afternoons and the dinner we had was excellent. The hotel has a 'cosy' feel - it was nice to be able to sit by the fire in the bar and read the newspaper! We will definitely come back.
