“Fantastic Break”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

Had a lovely weekend at the Rowardennan Hotel. We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist and all the staff were really helpful though out the stay. The food was gorgeous and plenty of choice. There was entertainment both evenings .
The hotel is located at the bottom of Ben Lomond so the views were lovely and there is plenty of walks for those who like to do so.
Thanks for giving us an enjoyable break
Gillian

We had a great time at New Year on a 2 night break, 4 adults 3 teenagers and 2 doggies.
The meal on Hogmanay was really nice everyone enjoyed it and the service was efficient.
We ate in the bar so we could have our dogs with us, and there was several dogs around!
The doggy friendliness is a huge plus for us. As for the entertainment yes it did have adult content we were ok with that and he was funny .
Rooms clean and comfortable.
Only criticism from our group the buffet on New Year's day could have been better- food a bit cold and choice for veggies poor.We enjoyed a laugh in the bar that night, though it was much quieter than Hogmanay.
We love this place and are frequent visitors in the summer with our boat, the beer garden on a lovely day is fab. The staff are friendly and very approachable if you are not happy with anything
.Roll on summer !

A passable dinner was served in a small room by pleasant staff although the service was not the best. They also accepted family bookings for the evening even though it included adult themed entertainment (the entertainer asked a member of staff to inform those with children that his act was not suitable for young ears). As for the manager however, I doubt there is anyone more unsuited to the service sector! He was rude, aggressive and quite an intolerable man. He really should take a course in Hospitality Management and Event Planning and learn the art of tact and diplomacy. Not a fine leader.

After reading other reviews we were a bit apprehensive about this hotel. The hotel is located with only one road in and out and is nestled next to Loch Lomond. The location is lovely as long as you are looking for peace and quiet and are happy to drive.
Our room was very comfortable, with a lovely en suite bathroom and a great view of the loch. My only minor, and personal complaint, would be that the bed was quite small and I found it uncomfortable.
Breakfast was exceptional with a lot of choice and the hot food cooked to order.
We had our evening meal at the hotel on the first night. Although satisfactory, the menu did not offer much choice and it was quite expensive. The ambience in the restaurant could also be improved on. On the following two nights we ate in the nearest village at the Oak Tree Inn which we would also give a 4* rating.
The staff were friendly without being over bearing and overall this was a very good value break.

Room Tip: We had Room 20 - on the ground floor with a great view of the loch

First of all let me say just ignore any negative comments you have read about this lovely hotel.
We arrived here on the 28th Dec and the weather was horrendous but inside the hotel and bar it was gloriously warm and cosy. The rooms are clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. We had a room with the most amazing view of the Loch.
The staff were very friendly and really can't do enough for you, especially Kenny and Alex.
The food was delicious and available all day.
We took our little dog Lola with us and she made friends with many other dogs who were there, being able to take our dog with us was the main reason that we booked here but the overall fantastic stay we had is the reason we are coming back in the summer with other family members.

This was a voucher deal which I will forever regret taking. So, where should I begin.....?

Firstly, as this was for my girlfriend's 30th birthday, I asked the hotel to put a bottle of champagne in the room for our arrival. I was assured this was no problem. It obviously was, because no bottle was waiting for us. Not a good start.

The next sign of ineptitude was the non-appearance of the cream tea that was meant to part of the deal. I went down to enquire about it and was told no problem. We were then presented with one warmed up scone each with cream and jam. No tea - this had to be asked for. "Just as well you didn't ask for coffee, cos we don't have any", the barman said.

Back to the room we went. And apart from the nice view of the loch, I can't say it was particularly nice. It was clean enough but closer inspection revealed stains on the wall, a badly covered up patch of damp on the ceiling and a warbrobe that appeared to have been gnawed at by mice. There also appeared to be dog hairs on the throw on the bed.

We're vegetarian so we decided to go into Drymen for dinner rather than go with the one vegetarian option on the menu in the hotel restaurant. On return, we headed to bed and then the next issue reared its head - the uncomfortable bed with exposed springs. Not the best night's sleep.

Next morning and we go down for breakfast. The waitress was pleasant and attentive, although it took a bit of time for the food to arrive - when it did, it was average but pretty greasy. We had planned on doing a bit of walking, possibly climbing Ben Lomond, but as the weather was bad this was't going to happen. The thing is, the hotel is not a particularly nice place to hang around when you can't do outdoor activities so we went for a drive to Lomond Shores, Drymen again and then to Balmaha for food. We then headed back to the hotel, we decided that we'd try The Clansman pub attached to the hotel. No luck there as it was closed. No idea why. So instead we endured very small and poorly stocked Rob Roy Bar which was packed with about 10 folk. No atmosphere, no music, just BBC 24 on the TV in the background. It was also insanely warm as there was an open fire onto which the barman kept unnecessarily adding logs to. The sweat was pouring off people's foreheads and all were complaining of how hot it was. We drank our one drink (from dirty glasses) and went back to the room, disappointed again with the total lack of anything to do in this hotel.

Then, the final and most alarming development. At about 2.30am on the Sunday (our last day, thankfully) an almightly argument started in the room above us, a man and a woman engaged in a violent shouting match which resulted in what sounded like the woman being assaulted. My girlfriend and I were obviously concerned by this and called reception (on a mobile phone - as there were no phones in the room) but this went straight to answering machine which didn't even take a message. I'm not saying that this fight was the hotel's fault but when there is absolutely no one manning reception or answering the phone, it speaks volumes for the total lack of respect for guests. Thankfully, someone knocked on the door and calmed the situation.

So, in summary, this is an awful, awful place. I would not recommend anyone stays here under any circumstances. Even if you're coming off the West Highland Way, keep going to Balmaha and stay at the Oak Tree Inn which is inifinitely nicer and has lovely food.

And yes, I will research a hotel properly for my girlfriend next time. Lesson learned.
