This cottage mixes new and old to seriously good effect. A new fitted kitchen is mixed with old stone walls, a traditional pine table and a contemporary sitting room. The kitchen is well-equipped and the log-burning stove in the sitting room is a nice addition if you're staying in winter – or on a cool summer snap like we were – and logs can be bought at the castle.
Overall the cottage is extremely well equipped and comfortable and very nicely decorated without being overly ornate. One bedroom has a comfortable double bed and the second bedroom has the option of a double or single bed – which is great if you have children who don't want to share or two singles with you. The information said that there was a sofa-bed in the sitting room too but we did not need to use this.
As well as liking the actual cottage we fell in love with the location. The cottage is set in the old stables of Wedderburn castle and you can walk in the grounds of the castle while you are staying there. It is very quiet and peaceful with lots of wildlife and beautiful trees and we felt more relaxed with our children than we would have somewhere close to a busy road. While it is in the countryside it is only a few minutes drive from Duns - the local village - where you can get all the essentials you need, but I would say that a car is essential as there is no public transport. Overall a great place for a holiday!
