We really enjoyed our short break, the lodge was lovely and our 4 year old is now missing his twice daily walk around the Estate.

“Peaceful location and well-equipped, comfortable cottage.”
Reviewed 21 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Stayed here with wife and young kids for a 4 night stay during the October half-term break. Booked at very last minute and secured a good discount.

Arrived in the dark and in pouring rain. Found the location after a bit of a search. Cottage was warm and welcoming. Three good sized double rooms and a nice open plan kitchen/living area. The cottage is well-equipped (although we couldn't find a tablecloth or a pair of scissors) and the beds comfortable. As the website says, there is a high chair available, but it is one of those without retaining straps. Might be worth bringing your own if that's a concern.

First impressions of the cottage might be negative for some due to the close proximity of the sewage treatment works and the large number of daddy long-legs on the outside of the building (attracted by the lights I think). There are also - as ought to be expected in a country cottage like this - some pretty big spiders to be found. Nothing that the owners can do about that (and there is a good vaccuum cleaner to swoosh them up), but worth bearing in mind if you are a bit arachnophobic.

The real selling point of the cottage is its location on the Castle Wedderburn estate. The estate roads are great for cycling and walking, even for very young children. We hardly saw a soul for the time we were there.

It is also close to Duns. Duns is a lovely little village, with a good selection of shops and places to eat. It's also a great location for touring the Borders and Northumberland.

We would certainly go back again.

“Outstanding cottage in the castle grounds”

This is a wonderful property that we stayed at for over 2 months. It is decorated beautifully with high quality fittings and furniture. The living area is the original keeper's cottage that has been fully restored with a modern three bedroom wing attached. The location in the wall of an 18th century castle with fabulous grounds and great privacy should suit most people. It is also just outside the quiet village of Duns in the midst of the Scottish borers and about an hour south east of Edinburgh which makes it a great getaway spot. We also found the staff and the family who owns the castle delightful. Top marks from us!!
