“Golf Break in Dumfries and Galloway”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

Myself and three other colleagues have just spent three fantastic days based at the Downshire Hotel on a golf break. Jenny booked all our tee times at three standout courses - Dunskey, Portpatrick; Wigtownshire and Stranraer. Paul, the owner, along with all of his staff made us extremely welcome and made sure our stay was enjoyable - which included the odd dram or two! The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation was very good and the food excellent. This was not pub food but top restaurant quality. Value for money this is the best of the fifteen golf trips we have done. Many thanks to Paul, Jenny and the rest of the staff for making our stay such a memorable one.

After a long day in the area on business I was looking forward to a good nights sleep in a confortable bed. Unfortunately this was not to be. Room was on the top floor of the hotel with no lift available and staff did not offer to help with cases. Room had unconfortable bed with plasticy mattress and smelt of damp. Bedding was cold and damp to touch. The only window in the room was bolted shut and could not be opened for ventilation. No bedside table or light. And the price? £89 a night!!

We stopped in to have a drink and ended up staying for several hours with the owner. We had a great first night in Scotland due to their hospitality. The food was really excellent and the staff was very friendly. Didn't stay at the hotel, but had a wonderful time at the pub!

The bar was open til 1am! Noisy people outside smoking below our room til 1 am
Food was good, breakfast fine.
Room 6 - no shower, just a bath. Room very old and smelled of damp.
Would not recommend it!

We can only apologise but this is a holiday village and we clearly advertise on website and facebook that we have live music at weekends we cannot control the noise from outside this is
a public road and people are coming and going from various places in the village. We really do
try to control the noise level in our own premises but cannot control public places.

Couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay. Clean, very modern. Stayed in the hotel before but found this was more suitable for families and even better the dog could stay too! Would definitely recommend.

Spent a few holidays at the adjoing holiday lets owned by the Downshire - Portpatrick Holiday Homes! Absolutely first class. Everything you could need in the home for a mini break or a week long holiday. Very clean and spacious! The Downshire Pub is cracking - a lovely traditional pub, roaring fire, great range of food and drinks and lovely staff. Never want to come home and looking forward to booking my next trip!!

We spent a cold 1st November evening in this place and were welcomed at the bar by the owner and locals. With the tourist season over, there were no other visitors in sight. We were overwhelmed by the warm hospitality and generosity and spent perhaps our best evening of our 5 day tour in this place. Had we known, we'd have taken rooms there too. Never mind. We enjoyed the best of Scottish friendliness in Downshire Hotel as it was.
