“Another excellent stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2012

We spent 3 nights at the Fernhill and had a front facing room with a balcony - we were so lucky with the weather and so were able to enjoy beautiful views. Staff were all so welcoming - nothing is too much trouble. Service in the restaurant was faultless - runs like clockwork with well trained staff -a credit to the hotel.
The menu and the food were excellent - beautifully presented - worthy of a 4/5 star hotel! We will be back -especially for the 3 for 2 night offers - a bargain!

Room Tip: During the summer a front facing room worth the cost

All the Macmillan owned family hotels have great staff and real character. You will not find a warmer welcome anywhere and it does make all the difference.

Fernhill could do with a lot of work on its fabric but spacious and homely. Food good, service excellent if a little slow. Shares leisure facilities with the Castle in Stranraer, which are a bit old fashioned but that is no bad thing in our shiny modern world.

Having really enjoyed a recent stay at a sister McMillan hotel, we thought we'd try another and were not disappointed. We were upgraded to a palatial room with separate sitting area in the annexe overlooking the harbour and village. The rooms are traditional in the decor department. They are very clean and comfortable with, in this case a four poster bed. The staff are exceptional from arrival to departure they make you feel as if they really are pleased to see you without faffing and fussing (which we hate). Relaxed and informal is the style for dining and the friendly restaurant staff put you at your ease to enjoy some excellent food. We had the best meal we've had in a long time - nothing out of the ordinary; Celeriac & Apple soup then Salmon with Squash and Parsnip mash followed by Raspberry Creme Brulee, but very well cooked. Icing on the cake is the fact that they welcome the dog so a good time was had by all. Only one tiny niggle was the wait we had for breakfast on the first morning which was 15 minutes to take the order and another 20 minutes to get the breakfast - also excellent when it came. We made sure we got in before 9am on the next two mornings to avoid the rush. Job done no worries.

Room Tip: Rooms in the annexe are large and quiet. Room 24 has an extra sitting room with extensive views of t...

We stay at the Fernhill hotel every year prior to getting the ferry over to Ireland, and they always offer a warm welcome with friendly professional staff.
Their restaurant is Second to none in the area and the picturesque views of the bay just make your stay perfect.
Highly recommended.

As in other reviews the Fernhill has excellent views of Portpatrick harbour the rooms are very good the food is excelent but let down by the service we have stayed here before and always been happy.

But we felt the dining room suffered from lack of leadership which took the shine of our visit.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the new part of hotel overlooking the gardens and down to the harbour

Well it isn't always the case but I'm afraid it does apply to this review.

The Fernhill is an absolutely first rate hotel. Our room in the original building had a stunning view of the village and harbour and out over the sea; It was very comfortable with a good standard of facilities; and the quality of the food throughout our 2 night stay was absolutely faultless. Our 3 course dinner on the first night was served promptly as was breakfast on both mornings - no more than might have been expected as on arrival we were asked at what time we would like to have dinner (offered in 15 minute time slots - presumably to avoid overloading the kitchen and waiting staff).
However, on the second night, having arrived at the alloted time, we waited fully 35 minutes for our starter and fully 1 hour after arrival for our main course to appear. Frustration prompted us to forego the sweet course, partly because of the potential for further delay, but mainly because other guests who had arrived in the dining room in some cases significantly later than us received their orders well before us.

Would we return to the Fernhill? Probably yes, but we might consider only a bed & breakfast basis next time, as it did appear that there were a number of alternative places to dine in the village.
.

Room Tip: A sea view room is worth asking for as the hotel is in an elevated position abouve Portpatrick.

My husbsnd and I have just returned from a two night stay, which we loved! on booking I mentioned that it was our anniversary and Ailsa (thank you) had arranged for a bottle of bubbly and chocs to be in our room, I also asked for a room with a nice view which we certainly got.
The staff are all friendly, happy people, nothing was any bother which made our stay more enjoyable.

I left my mobile phone charger, and they sent it to me in a day (thank you Carolyn).

And Thank You George who came to my husbands rescue in the middle of the night.

Fiona on reception thank you for being so helpfull and friendly.

The food was excellent as was the wine. We will definately be back.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the main building! Higher floor
