We have just returned from a three day stay at the Fernhill with our two children. Just the right mix of efficency and informality. The food was excellent, and the service helpful and friendly. We had a double room with adjoining room for the children in the annexe to the main hotel. Views lovely from our room and from the dining room and conservatory. A steep walk down to the little harbour. Lovely walks around, putting, tennis and plenty of sea! We weren't sure whether it would be good swimming in summer around here - if it is - then it would be hard to find a nicer spot.

To celebrate my Mother's 80th birthday. my brother, his family and I headed south and west to Portpatrick on the extreme edge of Scotland.
A lovely village clean and welcoming. - the glass of sherry on arrival was most welcome after a tussle with a traffic jam on the M74!
The Fernhill was accomodating, friendly and provided excellent service.
A super meal, fresh ingredients - emphasis on locally caught fish. game etc.
The main part of the hotel is an old building, well appointed, with wonderful views, a minor problem was the lack of a lift for elderly people with reduced mobility, but there are gound floor bedrooms.
The children were catered for very well, with a childrens' dinner sitting in the early evening if desired.
An excellent and restful stay. Quiet and appreciated by our Mother who had a very good time.

We have just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Fernhill Hotel in Portpatrick. This is an old, typically Scottish house which has been tastefully extended to take full advantage of the wonderful position overlooking the harbour of this little fishing village. There are several grades of bedrooms but we luxuriated in a huge room with fireplace, antique furniture and an enormous en suite bathroom. We were fortunate enough to have outstanding weather and this area does seem to have a microclimate as evidenced by many palm trees in nearby villages. The food in the hotel was excellent, the young staff in the diningroom (a conservatory, with views to rival anywhere in the world) were cheerful, attentive and Scottish! which is actually quite unusual these days.
Because the weather was so good we were able to take full advantage of local attractions including a memorable visit to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse, where there is a beautiful new Visitor centre..with a grass roof. There were no real downsides for us, although steep walk to the harbour (there is a bus) could prove a problem for some. In poor weather guests can use the sport and leisure facilities of the North West Castle hotel in Stranraer a short distance away. In fairness it would have been a completely different experience in poor weather, as all the walking and sitting outside the local pubs would not have been an option and the hotel doesn't have much public space although what there is is pleasant. However our experience was excellent.
