Here's what I call service. At the time of making our reservation here I casually mentioned in an e-mail that I'm not particularly fond of salmon. So I questioned the waiter when my wife was presented with salmon and I got halibut at dinner. They had effortlessly and seamlessly honoured my request.
But the best part of it was that I had been presented with a menu that only mentioned halibut, while everyone else's menu had salmon. Such attention to both detail and the customer is remarkable and, in my experience, unprecedented.
The emphasis is on accurate, imaginative preparation of quality produce with obvious nods to Scottish provenance. Their website makes it very clear that there is a fixed menu each night, but, as I've indicated, there is some flexibility.
I would overall describe the flavours as rather understated and subtle. Be clear this is not the more in-your-face flavours of top French or Italian cuisne. By opting for Knockinaam you have already voted to 'go local' and enjoy before you arrive.
The dining room is the right size for the number of guests, classically decorated with the ever-changing sea view visible. I'd particularly compliment the service which was slick and professional yet friendly; clearly well trained and totally diligent in what they did.
Our budget precluded an exploration of the upper reaches of the wine list, and there are some serious bottles in their cellar. Yet we found some enjoyable quality wines to complement our dinner.
On both evenings we opted for one dessert and one cheese plate so we could share them. Each time an imaginative selection of different cheeses was presented; along with quality desserts made with fresh fruit.
Our favourite dish: cappucino of cauliflower scented with truffle. Simple, subtle, sensational.
That would sum up the Knockinaam dining experience.
