Great place to stay, freindly proffessional staff in all quarters. upgraded room with sea view, very nice, good choice of well cooked and presented meals. No hesitation in reccomending this hotel and given the chance would stay again it was worth the long journey.

I have just returned from a shearings weeks holiday to the Portaptrick hotel. The hotel was lovely, with lovely food and a good choice. The waitresss staff were excellent .
Our room was very nice,we had asked for a sea view and I cant deny that we could see the sea but our window was very small. There was only room for one person to stand in front of the window at a time.
Our bathroom was lovely and clean and spacious.
Our chamber maid did an excellent job.
It was a shame that our driver had been brought in for the one week which meant having not done this holiday before he was not able to give us any commentary of what we were seeing or where we were going. But this is the second shearings holiday I have had this year that this has happened. I dont know what Shearings are thinking but this does spoil the holiday. You dont want the driver talking all the time but some knowledge of the area would be good!
Our optional day trip was cancelled because the other Shearings driver at the hotel who should have taken us was not prepared to run it. We gathered that he had a pre-arranged a game of golf!!!!!
Again shame on Shearings.
But Portpatrick is a lovely place and the hotel can be commended

Room Tip: A sea view lovely

Thank you for the review of our hotel. Your lovely comments will be passed onto all concerned. I also think it’s a shame that they send a driver who unfortunately does not know the area. Some drivers take time to study the best the can before they get here, but sometimes, there is just no time to do so. The driver who played golf was here for his first time as well. As far as I was aware, it was also his day off and wasn’t permitted to drive, hence the reason for playing golf. Hopefully your next trip with Shearings will include one of our very knowledgeable tour drivers. Thank you again.

We visited this hotel for 2 nights at the end of August. There were 9 in our party for a family celebration. This review is very mixed.

Pros:-
1. Beautiful location overlooking the bay at Portpatrick.
2. Updated public rooms and spacious lounges.
3. Good quality hot breakfast.

Cons:-
1. We booked an upgraded twin room with seaview.
- Although there was a lovely view you could only see it out of the window when standing up.
- the :typically luxurious beds: were not at all luxurious. One mattress was identical to that of another family member in a standard room. The other mattress had definitely seen better days and was worn - see picture.
2. Meals were mostly fine although my sister ordered off the a la carte menu one evening and asked for chips instead of new potatoes. What she wasn't told until presented with the chitty to sign for an extra, was that there was a charge for changing the type of potato. This was then an extra item.
3. Window in bathroom was sealed with brown sticky tape.
4. Twin beds were in a corner of the room with walls at each bed and only one foot between them.

Room Tip: Don't pay extra for a seaview and superior room

Thank you for the review. The size of the room and the height of the window, I can do nothing about. I will look into your other comments and rectify them as soon as possible. Thanks again for the review.

This hotel is in a superb position overlooking Portpatrick. We had a short holiday here with Shearings which was very enjoyable. The hotel is over 100 years old and gradually being refurbished. On the ground floor are two lounges, bar, dining room, open seating area and outside terrace both with excellent views. We found the food to be good, sometimes main course at dinner was a bit disappointing, but this could be down to making the wrong choice of several dishes. Breakfast generally good although the DIY toast making was a bit odd and something I have only found outside the UK. Staff were very hardworking and pleasant. We had a sea view room (a must) and also booked a superior room (121) which was a good size and had been recently upgraded and was excellent apart from a very drafty window - no doubt new windows will be eventually installed although this will be a huge expense - meantime some draft excluder may help and keep down heating bills! Understand from other guests that standard rooms are smaller and may be awaiting upgrading. The room was very quiet with no noise from within the hotel (no loud banging doors etc)

All in all a good holiday in this splendid location

Room Tip: A sea view room is a must. Superior rooms are larger with bath and shower.

Thank you for the review. The old windows can be a problem at times. We are looking into this, but it is, as you say, a huge expense. Self-serve toasters lets the guest get their toast when then want it. It is actually quite common in this country now as well.

Very few hotels have such a stunning location, overlooking Portapatrick village, the harbour & across the Irish Sea to County Antrim, County Down & the Isle of Man. However, while offering decent value (single for £49.50 per night) & decent breakfasts, I feel that it is all just a bit down-market & tired. If a few million was spent on it, the hotel could be just as stunning as the location, but would it get the extra business to recoup the cost? Probably not sadly....

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the sea will have great views

Thank you for the review. I would love to write that we are about to spend “a few million” on the hotel, but the reality is that out of £49.50 (20% of which goes to the government) there is very little left after we pay for staff, food, utilities rates and all other expenditures. So we do what we can, a bit at a time.

The staff were very good especially the dinning room staff They coped admirably. The rooms were kept clean the only down side was the shower.it went from hot to cold and back again. The view was spectacular and considering what we paid it was excellent value for money. It was lovely to be able to sit on the terrace and watch the world go by.
