Booked this hotel at the last minute. The location overlooking the Solway Firth is lovely. Powfoot is the perfect place if you are looking for a peaceful break. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The evening meal and breakfast were super. Our room was a bit dated but the bed comfortable.

Had occasion to have a meal here a few weeks ago. What a disappointment long wait and unfriendly staff. We felt that we were an inconvenience at one point my husband had to go and look for someone to bring us a jug of water. There seemed to be a shortage of staff and what staff they did have could not cope with the few diners in the restaurant. We left without having dessert as the waitress was just not interested whether we had one or not. I have known this hotel for many years it is in a prime location and could be a first class place but the owners just don't seem to care.

I am so delighted that I decided to revisit this beautifully positioned hotel - the location is so tranquil and very special it is not surprising that I decided to give it a second and third chance!

The staff are all very professional and also welcoming, they clearly wish to ensure that the guests wish to return (unlike the departed previous manager!). The food is outstanding in freshness and quality.

Lunch - We ordered roast beef baguette with salad and crisps, Prawn Marie baguette with same which it was very well presented on oval dinner plates. Very nice indeed and beef so moist it was clearly carefully cooked and certainly not the usual left over roast other places may deliver. My friend raved about her lunch and thought that the portion size was very generous as well as the presentation being lovely.

Evening meal - We chose fish and chips as main course although there are many courses and choices available. The fish was fantastic - fresh and tasty with super crispy batter! The hand cut chips were also tasty. I wondered if they placed the chips aside the fish instead of under it, wether the chips would be even crispier as there would be no trapped steam that could make them soggy.

Event - I saw two weddings on my visits - amazing and how welcoming the staff were. Very relaxed and free for bride and groom and family to wander through the areas feeling special, with children wandering freely and happily! I noticed a box of toys cleverly placed for little ones. The events did not impact on other guests due to the spacious layouts etc which may be reassuring.

Wishes
1 - keep it up!!
2 - No local presence - and the place does feel at times a bit lacking of local involvement ie it could be anywhere and needs a bit more local identity which would avoid visitors feeling like they are the only people in the building.
3 - Develop your outside seating - only two picnic benches is inadequate as lots of visitors would use when seeing a lovely view and place to sit for refreshment and / or food.

Advice to
those unsure - it is a rare treasure - do not miss out!

We ate here on last Saturday night as a table of 6. We came in to ask if we could book for 7.30 but were told it would be 7.15 or 7.45. No idea why as the place was empty. We had a drink in the bar where we also ordered our food and the waiter kindly showed us to our table when our starters were ready. Everyone enjoyed their starters, particularly the haggis balls. I ordered a blue steak for main course and it was perfectly cooked! All the plates were huge and filled with delicious, piping hot food. Desert was also very nice, the only complaint being that the banoffee pie was an extremely small portion and in my opinion not worth £4.75. Me and my partner had the sticky toffee pudding and it was light and moist. As a chef myself I was very happy with the quality if the food and wouldn't hesitate to return the next time we come to the area on holiday!

stayed 2 nights...good food, comfortable bed, pity that no air conditioning or even a fan in the room as stifling in this heatwave! The only downside was the hotel's insistence that they had nothing to do with the golf course...in fact you can get discounted golf rates if you book through hotel which was told to us by the golf club...the hotel is really missing a trick here...they should be encouraging golfers as a great venue. Staff busy and seem to be doing multi jobs but nonetheless service was fine. No wifi in rooms and really slow speed even when in the bar area. Book through agency like bookings.com as cheaper than directly with hotel

Room Tip: superior double worth the extra

After working in Glasgow, I was just looking for a one night stop to break up the journey. The Powfoot was perfect, I stayed in room 31, which was situated in a separate annex, huge bathroom and excellent shower. Bed was comfy. Food served in the bar was really nice, and breakfast was ok. Staff were busy, but that's not their fault and some of the guest were complaining about not having toast etc, but it was no big deal. The lack of working Wifi seemed to be a problem, but I managed to log on in the bar, but struggled anywhere else. No Wifi or Mobile phone reception in the rooms, which is not the Hotels fault. Will definitely stay there again, the views and scenery definitely are a bonus.

Room Tip: Rooms 30, 31 & 32 are situated in the outside Annex and appear to have been recently refurbished...

We spent last weekend in Powfoot for our wedding, and have had the best time ever. 21 of us stayed and we were all made to feel so welcome. Ellen has been fabulous and helped so much with our reception which was held here. The food was delicious, our rooms were all clean and nice. We were lucky enough to have gorgeous weather too and no one wanted to leave. I know we will definitely be returning.
Thank you so much to all the staff.
