Description: ReadingLasses has new owners and opened its doors on 25th July 2015 after a total refurbishment. We are still a bookshop specialising in Women's Studies and a tearoom with the same wonderful staff preparing and serving great food. We particularly specialize in great coffee and homebakes. Come and relax in our cosy lounge and read a book or sample our homemade scones and baking in our middle café or lunch in the rear café.

We have just returned from a week in Galloway & visited Readinglasses a couple of times during our stay. All the staff were friendly & the food was home made & very good. Slightly chaotic service at busy times, which didnt appear to suit some of the customers, but this added to the charm of the place for us as we were hoping for a 'go slow' holiday away from the usual hustle & rush of life. They welcomed Jasper (our springer spaniel) too, despite being very busy and even had dog biscuits for him! We would definately recommend.

Three of us - two adult men and one boy - tried to use the coffee shop. We sat for fifteen minutes while three staff completely ignored us. No "what would you like", no "sorry to keep you waiting" - no eye contact, even. Eventually we gave up and walked out, which again produced no reaction at all. The only other customers in the place - a male/female couple - were waiting when we arrived and were still waiting when we left.

Perhaps Readinglasses is simply, like so many Scottish business, run by people who hate the general public. Perhaps it is simply run by incompetents who have not realised that actually serving customers might be a good thing to do. In view of the political stance of the place, though, I suspect that men simply are not welcome, and that rather than say that upfront (which would be illegal) they just do their best to drive male customers away.

Oh well. We shall see. The place changed hands recently and at this rate will have another set of owners soon. Perhaps they'll do better.
