Description: ReadingLasses has new owners and opened its doors on 25th July 2015 after a total refurbishment. We are still a bookshop specialising in Women's Studies and a tearoom with the same wonderful staff preparing and serving great food. We particularly specialize in great coffee and homebakes. Come and relax in our cosy lounge and read a book or sample our homemade scones and baking in our middle café or lunch in the rear café.

Lovely wee cafe which serves the best hot chocolate and cakes in Wigtown - all homemade and huge selection! And you can read a book while you are there!

We arrived in Wigtown late on a Saturday afternoon only to find that all bookshops bar this one were shut. THe next day seemingly all the bookshops, again save for ReadingLasses, were closed. We found it odd that a booktown proclaiming itself to be Scotland's Hay-on-Wye would closedown on a Sunday during the tourist season. Quiet and charming though Wigtown is, its retailing seems to be stuck in 1956 - my wife tried to redeem a scratchcard at a local provision shop and was admonished with a horrified "Not on a Sunday".

So congratulations to ReadingLasses for its renegade approach to Wigtown retailing.

The bookshop has a good selection of second hand books and my brother found a couple for which he had been searching for a couple of years. It also has a pleasant cafe section with good coffee. The staff are helpful and charming. Worth a visit.

We seem to end up at ReadingLasses each time we visit Wigtown. It has a homely yet quirky atmosphere. Food is great. Freshly prepared using local ingredients. Staff are warmly friendly. We had lunch there and then ended going back for afternoon cakes. If you want to escape the slightly noisier part of the bookshop/cafe, there is a lovely quiet room at the back with sofas to lounge in.

We've visited Reading Lasses before, about 5 yrs ago and was looking forward to a light lunch there. The staff are lovely and friendly and there is a table in what was previously a books only room which made browsing in there difficult, I felt like I was encroaching on the diners privacy..delicious soup, pea, mint and leek but was a bit disappointed with the sandwiches...the bread was hand cut a bit thickly and was very crumbly..bits of our sandwiches kept dropping in the soup. We do love the shop/cafe but I feel the books are difficult to view because of the amount of tables and therefore become background decoration and you haven't got your sandwich bread quite right...
