“Lots of Room”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

The Knoydart Foundation Bunkhouse has lots of room for a big gang. It is spread out among the old stables of Knoydart Lodge, with several sleeping rooms, a big cozy sitting room with a wood stove and a big kitchen for your food preparation. Don't expect luxury, but do expect a very friendly atmosphere.

We didn't arrive in Inverie via the ferry like most, we opted to walk from the Barrisdale Bothy, via Ladhar Bheinn. The hot shower on arrival at the Knoydart foundation lodge, was very enjoyable. Comfortable beds, and bedding is provided, Anna, is very helpful, and the pub is a short walk away at the other end of the village. We were in bedroom 1, which entailed a walk outside to get to the toilets/shower and the drying room. I would suggest a pair of flip-flops in your ruck-sack. Kitchen and lounge facilities are provided - over-all, a recommended stopping-off point on your walk around the Knoydart peninsular.

Congratulations on your walk in via Ladhar Bheinn and we're glad to be of service with the well-deserved hot shower! You're right about the tip for flip-flops or similar if guests are in Room 1 and it's been noted - thank you.

We stayed for three nights and enjoyed every part of our trip (even thought we did have more rain then we would have liked!). The bunkhouse was perfect - very well looked after and has a very pleasant atmosphere. Anna is doing a great job.
During our stay the bunkhouse was rather full as there was one large group with a large number of kids (half term break) and we were in the room right next to the kitchen. However, despite some of the other reviews saying that this room gets a bit of noise we certainly did not experience that. So I guess it depends on how considerate the other guests are.
Similarly, although we were warned about hot water possibly running out when the place is pretty full - we did not experience this at all.
The walk from the Pier or Old Forge is about 10-15 minutes so just as the other reviews suggest if you’re doing this late at night have some sort of torch.
During our stay we did a few walks including the Knoydart in a Knutshell as well as the 15 mile Airor Circuit. We had a perfect weather day for this which made it even better and got lucky by getting a lift on the quad bike across the river at Inverguseran thanks to Iain. We did this walk anti-clockwise and loved the scenery.
We also took the ponies for a ride – another very pleasant experience thanks to Anna and Angela.
Overall a lovely stay and will certainly be recommending Knoydart and the Bunkhouse! Thanks again to everyone for making this stay so pleasant for us.

Thank you for your lovely comments about your stay at the Bunkhouse; we're glad you enjoyed it and that everything worked out for your stay on Knoydart - even the weather and your lift across the Inverguserain river! You're right about bringing torches here, they are a must.......it does get very dark here on a moonless night.

I have traveled the world but few places are as fascinating at Knoydart. I am glad we stayed in the bunkhouse. It has everything one might need from a roaring fireplace to a hot shower. We were three snoring blokes and as the place was empty we each had our own room! Thanks for making our stay such a memorable one.

Room Tip: If walking back from the pub make sure you have a light or torch!

We think Knoydart's pretty special too! We know how important a roaring stove and a hot shower is after a hard day's walking in the hills - happy to be of service :-) And yes, we recommend to all our guests to bring a torch as we have very dark skies when the moon's not out!

Hi there,

I have stayed in many hostels in Scotland (btw the overall quality of hostels in Scotland is really poor, especially in Edinburgh - cannot be compared to let´s say Ireland) and I have to say that KFB is definitely the best: 1/ clean (maybe some rug or something in the reception area would be a good idea – the tiles are so white and the boots are so dirty…), 2/ well equipped (kitchen is really good, I would just consider to add one more cooker), 3/ good bathroom (another recommendation - a chair or something for putting off the stuff would be fine), 4/ very good drying room. Plus if you add a very nice and helpful warden (thanks Anna) the picture is complete.

Some other points:

1/ I had 17 kg rucksack and it was approximately 10 min walk from the pier to the hostel - so definitely not a big deal. I do not understand that some people seem to have problem with that. Knoydart = walking, it is quite simple you just have to use your legs…;

2/ if you want to have Knoydart for yourself go there from Sunday evening/Monday – Thursday in late September;

3/ good walks – (i) if tired/in case of a bad weather take the west concrete road to Airor and make a loop back to Inverie (2/4 – concrete road, 1/4 path, 1/4 track) but be aware that you have to cross the river and there is no bridge/ropes, (ii) if in a good mood and shape (or if you want/need to make a call) go to Ladhar Bheinn – it is demanding but great – one of the best walks I have ever had!

4/ regarding remoteness/wilderness vs. cars/people/concrete road – it is definitely remote and wild in European terms but people still live/work there so there are cars, there is a school, post office (selling basic groceries but opened only some days in a week) etc. BUT if you WANT to avoid all of that you have plenty possibilities how to do that and where to go which is for me the decisive thing.

So pack your rucksack and go!

I stayed here for two nights with my girlfriend after seven days backpacking in the the surrounding area and found it was utterly amazing. It was warm, cosy, friendly and laid back. The showers were basic but clean and the hot water never seemed to run out.. I did use it for rather a long time!

The kitchen was ample with communal tea and coffee and the lounge area had a good collection of comfy sofas and things to keep you entertained and a wood burner. We were very wet after our time in the wilderness and the drying room did an excellent job.

Its located just off the track that leads into the wilderness so its perfect for anyone coming from Glenfinnan. It is a little way from the peer but its a very nice walk along a flat road and if your not in the area to go walking i'm not entirely sure what your doing there.

A brilliant place in all i couldn't find a fault.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 1 which got a bit of noise from the kitchen so maybe chose another

Thank you for your lovely comments. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and found it to be just what you needed after your long walk. We have taken on board your comments about being in the room next to the kitchen; some others have raised the same point - so we have ordered some earplugs!
