Lovely afternoon downtown so we thought we would checkout the house. Hours posted indicate it should be open, but the house was locked up with nobody to be found. We called the number posted and it just rang. Very disappointing.

The home had been moved here from its original location and we almost walked right past it rounding the corner onto Beale Street. It is tucked back in a parking area near the corner of 4th & Beale.

W.C. Handy, the Father of the Blues, lived with his wife and 5 children in this tiny house during his time in Memphis. We were the only ones there that rainy morning, so our informative young docent had plenty of time to fill us in on this memorable musician. Essentially the tour includes 2 rooms: the front room which is decorated in keeping with the time of Handy, with a few personal items, and the back room, which holds many pictures and memorabilia of Handy's life, including framed copies of the many, many compositions rewrote (most notable of which is 'St. Louis Blues".

We saw pictures of and were told about his children, how his business progressed and grew, and saw many pictures of Handy in different setting/activities. Our docent filled in the background of this talented man and made our visit pleasant and rewarding.
