Owner description: Sun Studio - The place where an 18 year old Elvis Presley recorded his first song. It’s well-known in the music industry as "The Birthplace of Rock 'N' Roll" and the most famous recording studio in the world. Opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in 1950, this national Historic Landmark is where superstar musicians like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and countless others started their recording careers. Today, Sun Studio still serves as a recording studio in the evenings while hosting public tours during the daytime hours.

“A must for any music fan”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

The studio itself is not that impressive but the history attaching to it is fantastic. Hearing about how it all started with Elvis(although he only recored around 10 songs here),Johnny Cash,Jerry Lee Lewis, etc and hearing some of those early recordings gave you a sense of their importance to the evolution of rock & roll music. It was a treat to stand on the spot where Elvis sang and with the mike used by him & the others mentioned. We also toured Studio B in Nashville(where Elvis recorded over 250 songs) which was also fantastic. Comparing the two I would say that Studio B was slightly better but maybe because the tour guide was much more informative & enthusiastic. I also thought the tour group was much too large for Sun Studios - we went on the first tour of the day so it may be better to go later.

“A Memphis Must”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

This studio tour is an incredible experience. The tour guides do an excellent job of weaving the story of the music and musicians into the tour and parts of the studio are nearly untouched. Even if you aren't familar with the music of the period you will enjoy Sun Studio. Make sure and purchase some great music at the gift store as you leave. The best souvenirs from Memphis say Sun Studio

“Backbeat Tour w/Sun Studio”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

We went with the Backbeat Tour and we got to go upstairs and then into the recording studio. Very informational! They do play snippets of songs from various artists however the main focus here is Elvis.

While in memphis, we did the sun studio tour, cost $11.00, and was really worth it. Our tour guide was very friendly and knew alot, The tour took about 45 min, and then you could walk around and take pictures(some areas you con't use your flash) the studio had X markes where Elvis stood with the mic he used and you could take your picture, It was really a great place to visit.

“Fun trip - had a ball.”
Reviewed 1 June 2012

we walked from the Peabody to here - it was only a 20min walk and the cafe was overflowing with people and the bosses classic car outside the studio is a nice touch

the tour was quick (quick upstairs visit then downstairs to recording area) but the tour guide was super friendly and seemed to really enjoy his job.

from here, we walked about 10mins to the trolley line and took a trolley back to our hotel area. super easy trip to enjoy
