Owner description: Sun Studio - The place where an 18 year old Elvis Presley recorded his first song. It’s well-known in the music industry as "The Birthplace of Rock 'N' Roll" and the most famous recording studio in the world. Opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in 1950, this national Historic Landmark is where superstar musicians like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and countless others started their recording careers. Today, Sun Studio still serves as a recording studio in the evenings while hosting public tours during the daytime hours.

The Sun Studios tour took you through a brief tour of musical history, and it gave you a glimpse of what had happened into those studios. The tour guide was excellent, you could tell that he really knew his musical history and didn't just memorize his spiehl. The highlight of the tour was to visit the unchanged room where many musical greats recorded their first hits. This is definitely a do-not-miss on a Memphis vacation.

“Awesome Tour!”

My family and I visited Sun Studio on 4/21 and we loved it! Our tour guide (Forgot her name) was one of the best we've ever had! She was funny and very informative. Everything is original to the way it was in the 50's. It's neat to be in the same room where greats such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded their first songs. You lean not only the history of Sun, but a great deal on the artists who recorded there. A must see when in Memphis!

“A piece of musical history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2008

We arrived at exactly 1:30 for the 1:30 tour (they run every hour on the half-hour), late from the Stax Museum and maneuvering our huge rental van into the narrow alley for parking. The guide ushered us in and let us take the tour without paying for our tickets beforehand! Of course we paid on our way out - I was just impressed that they trusted us and didn't make us wait in line, as we surely would have missed the tour. Thanks!

The guide was peppy; even though my sister hated her, I liked her. She obviously was having fun with her job. The content of the tour was great and I love love loved hearing the music made here. It was wonderful being in the actual recording studio where so many inspiring and influential musicians played. And I liked that it was kind of in the middle of nowhere in a run-down neighborhood.

The 2:30 tour looked super-crowded so I was glad we'd made the one before. I wouldn't want to be in a huge crowd on this tour; close quarters. My advice would be to go early.

Overall - you can't go to Memphis and not go to Sun Studio!

“Don't forget your AAA discount!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2008

We really enjoyed this tour. Make sure to stand on the x spot where Elvis sang. The pictures are fabulous..so cool of the million dollar quartet (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis). You can even see where they stood in the room for the picture. We used our AAA card and got 20% discount. Loved to hear how the old songs were recorded, not to mention some of the background noise (newspaper in broken amp), paper on guitar to sound like drums. Awesome place.
