Took a stroll over here last week while in Memphis. It was very enjoyable and educational for both us and the kids. The model of the Mississippi is VERY well done. The kids enjoyed walking "the whole river", while my wife and I read the descriptions and learned a fair amount we didn't know about the river and the cities along it. Nice little gift shop and great views of the river and downtown.

Thank Matt M

I enjoyed our visit to Mud Island. This tribute to the Mississippi River is well done. The river walk shows all the cities that border the Mississippi as well as the depths, widths, and flood plains. A lot of work and thought went into this design. Kids (and some adults) were wading though the model of the river. The park has great potential; however the grounds are not well maintained (cracked pieces, weeds, dirt and debris in the deeper sections, missing/broken labels, ect...)

I expected to see locals jogging, many kids playing, and lots more tourist; but there were very few people for a Friday afternoon in July.

Be careful of your timing. The island closes at 5 PM we elected to walk over instead of taking the monorail. When we arrived at the other end of the monorail walkway at 4:45 the gates were already three quarters of the way drawn. The workers were ready to leave. I have no idea what we would have done if they had locked us in.

I asked an employee where Memphis and Mud Island were on the model and he was not able to tell me.
I am not sure who runs mud island, but whoever is in charge is not doing a very good job.

It closes at 5 but the monorails stop at 4 so you should get there before 4pm. The monorail costs 4 dollars per person for there and back across the river to get to mud island. You could walk across but it would take a little longer. It shows you a complete diagram of the Mississippi River through all the states. You can play in the water and pay to go on a paddle boat across the water but it's a very small amount of water to go across. it has a beautiful view of the river.

It's really only about the Mississippi river and nearby towns. The presentation is unique, however, and it was especially interesting since we had driven from New Orleans and visited many of the places "in real". Plenty of information on boards. Fun for kids with the flowing water.

We were disappointed that the bridge closes and there is no access in the evening. Would have been a nice place for an evening stroll, but we were unable to check if out.
