“Memphis - Good Location to Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2010

Close to the City Centre, overlooking the river from the roof, this stylish hotel has a lot to offer the tourist staying a night or two in Memphis. A smart hotel, well appointed with friendly staff. We stayed in a double double and if anything the beds were slightly narrow. Our room had no view, facing onto the side street, but the roof terrace is worth a visit. Breakfast was taken in the cafe room on the ground floor. The complimentary breakfast was a bit limited in offer, but you can pay more and order from the menu. Valet parking quite expensive, but at least it gets rid of the car easily, you could probably park yourself nearby for much lees.

The Madison is a nice hotel in a good location. The front door and front desk people are nice. Having said that, we had some problems. The first night we were there, we woke up in the middle of the night; the heat had suddenly kicked in and the temp went up to 83 degrees. The control panel was unresponsive. We called the front desk. The young lady was extremely polite but basically said there was nothing she could do. After 20 minutes or so, the control panel had responded to the Off position finally so there was no more hot air belching out of the vents. After another 30 minutes or so, I decided to try for 76 degrees, and turned on the AC again. It worked fine. We have no idea why this happened but we were not contacted by the front desk the next day.

We tried unsuccessfully for a full day to get ice - it has to be delivered to you. If you hang out in your room at turn down service time, you can get ice then. Unfortunately, that's around 7 - 8 pm. If you want to hang out in your room at that time, you are in luck.

The fourth day, we had no room service. The sheets should have been changed. We called the front desk at 5 and they sent someone up but the sheets were not replaced and all they did was make the bed and tidy the bathroom. Apparently they had a personnel problem because when we were checking out the next day, someone else was complaining that they had had no room service the day before.

We want to go to Memphis again but will probably not stay there. They want to be a first class hotel and compete with the Peabody but if you can't get ice to your visitors, then you can't be a first class hotel. We will probably try staying a little further north up Main St in one of the chain hotels that has kitchenettes. This puts you a little further from Beale Street but you can just use the trolley.

The free internet was good. The rooms are stylish. The mattress was not great but that's such a personal thing I hate to comment on it. I was not terribly comfortable.

This is a real pros and cons kind of place. Some good, some bad. In telling a friend, I would tell both the good and the bad and let them decide.

We sincerely appreciate you taking the time and providing us with your feedback. I am terribly sorry that we fell short in exceeding all your expectations as is the case with great majority of our guests. While ice service is provided during turn down (whether guests are in the room or not, unless do not disturb sign is on) our staff gladly will deliver ice at anytime during our guests stay. Obviously we failed to do so in a timely manner in your case and for that we apologize. I also apologize for the room housekeeping issue, but unfortunately do not have enough details to have it looked into.
We would be grateful if you would also provide us with our in house electronic comment card that you may have received after your departure as it contains more details and gives us the opportunity to pinpoint the areas of opportunity and further train those individuals who dropped the ball in making sure all your needs were met prior to your departure. We hope you do not view this as the norm at the Madison and give us the pleasure of serving you again on your future visits to Memphis.

We spent a weekend at The Madison and enjoyed the low-key upscale environment. The staff are very pleasant and helpful, and add to the experience. The rooms and beds are new and comfortable. The restaurant has very good food but is small, and like many hotel restaurants it struggles to keep things moving at peak times. Don't miss the rooftop patio area for a spectacular view of the river. The location is convenient to downtown Memphis locations and is easy to get in &out of. There is a feeling of security and efficiency despite the busy urban location and streetscape.

This trip was for the wedding of a friend. The service from arrival to check out was exceptional. From when we steppedinto the door, the courteousness of the staff was exceptional. The accommodations were warm, cozy, and restful. The food at the dinner was delicious. Most outstanding service we have received from a staff in luxury surroundings.

The Madison is on a scale with any of the Luxury Boutique Hotels I have stayed in. I use the Kimpton Hotels on the west coast on a regular basis, and the Madison exceeded many of the Kimpton properties.

we picked this hotel off the net - never having been to Memphis before we just took a punt.
We were very pleseantly surprised from the moment the gentlemen on the door greeted us to the ladies at the front desk.
The staffs pleasant manner continued throughout our stay and they could not help us enough.
We felt at home, enjoyed the quiet and privacy but enjoyed this upmarket boutique style hotel where the staff truly out did themselves.
We would love to stay again and hope to in the future.

We stayed to celebrate an anniversary. At first there were no problems. We ordered chocolate covered strawberries to enjoy in the room, and they were fabulous. We had a nice view and we enjoyed the rooftop at the hotel. We had reserved a king suite that touted a jet (whirlpool type) tub. We decided to use it, and when we started running the water, we noticed hair and grit in the tub. We sanitized the tub and started the water again, then noticed that the jets had mold on them. Once again, we stopped and cleaned the jets. We finally were able to fill the tub with water, and I turned the jets on. They ran for a couple of minutes, then stopped. We continued to try to turn them on to no avail. We called the front desk, and a building engineer was called to our room. He tried to resolve the problem, but the jets had developed a short that couldn't be repaired before our stay was over. He apologized, but the front desk never called to check and also didn't apologize. Nothing was offered to us to compensate for the failure of the jets. The tub was one of the main reasons we opted for a suite vs. a regular room. We ate lunch in the hotel restaurant (Grill 83) and the service was slow and one of the drinks we ordered was incorrect. Nothing was done about that, either.

I sent a letter via fax on two occasions to let the manager know how displeased we were, but I never heard a word from anyone at the hotel. There has been no letter, no phone call, etc., and of course, the hotel has my information. I haven't given the hotel plenty of time to respond, but since no one has, I decided to write this review to discourage others from staying.

I enjoy luxury hotels and have stayed at the Madison a few times even though I live in Memphis just because I like to stay downtown often, but I will never stay at the Madison again and will adivse my friends, family and associates to stay elsewhere.

I am so terribly sorry that your latest experience at the Madison was a disappointing one, particularly that it appears you have been a repeat guest of ours. I can assure you that I did not receive the fax letter you are referring to or would have personally responded to you immediately. Our Madison Butler and Front Desk operations keep detailed logs of our guest service breakdowns and recoveries and our staff cannot find a record of your jet tub complaint anywhere. I have personally spoken to our PM shift maintenance associate and he assures me that he has not responded to any non-operating jet tub calls in the last 4 weeks. If your stay was prior to the last 4 weeks we would like to have more details so that we can address the issues.

I also sent you an email through your Trip Advisor mailbox asking you to contact me so that we can hopefully recover from this service breakdown. Unfortunately I have not heard back. Not having received your “faxed” letter or a response to my personalized email puts us in a sad situation of not being able to address your concerns and earn your loyalty back.

Warm Regards,
