We stayed at the Homewood for a week. Travel time to downtown Memphis was about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic and construction. Rush hours weren't too bad, and didn't add significantly to the travel time either morning or night. The hotel's in a nice and safe area of town, with tons of dining options (and grocery stores) close; overall, we thought it was worthwhile being a little way from downtown.
The room (1 bdrm. suite) was just fine - fairly spacious and nicely appointed; but the bathroom was only accessible through the bedroom, which was a minus. There was very little noise, and parking was convenient to the rooms (though if you arrive after about 7pm it can be hard to get a spot close to your room). The gym was small but nice; the laundry was barely adequate (the dryers in particular functioned extremely poorly).
The breakfast and evening reception were both decent - it's a little more than a continental breakfast, with sausage and bisuit, eggs, and rotating sides (home fries, hash, etc.) as well as the normal cold selections; and there's enough to make a simple meal out of the reception if you like. The food isn't amazing, but it's a nice and convenient bonus.
All that said, the hotel seemed barely functional from a housekeeping standpoint. Almost everything in that area went wrong: not enough clean linens in the room at check-in, blood-stained sheets from previous occupants left in the bedroom closet, too few towels provided, broken coffee maker (never replaced), and broken glasses left in the dishwasher were just some of the problems we encountered. Unfortunately, calls to the front desk didn't result in prompt fixes - we normally had to call multiple times over periods of a few hours (and twice had to head down to the front office ourselves) to get the problems addressed. That part of our stay was extremely annoying, and because of the poor housekeeping it's hard for me to recommend this place despite the otherwise nice rooms, good location, and pleasant service.
A final note for those travelling with infants - though we called in advance to confirm that the hotel provided cribs, they really only have small playpens (a reviewer of another Memphis hotel also had this problem, so I wonder if it's a dialect issue).
