“Friendly, comfortable, good food”

Don't be put off by the slightly shabby look of the entrance. The bedrooms--the ones we saw--have all been upgraded and are very comfortable. This is a characterful hotel with a history. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The menu is pub grub (heavy emphasis on burgers), but the quality is very high. The breakfast was excellent--the Welsh rarebit a real treat.

This hotel is quirky with a lovely blend of old and new. The food is good and the friendly service makes a winning combination and we will be staying there again when we next visit the area. Five star all the way, thank you

This Hotel has perfected the art of balancing an old established decor, ambience and furnishing whilst embracing all that modern technology demands of a Hostelry this size.
When you combine the facilities with fine food and friendly service you have a winning formula. One other bonus is the value, we checked the bill several times for omissions this has to be one of the best deal Hotels nationwide.
Just as an aside if you are a cyclist the rides round this area very challenging but extremely rewarding. Bottom line highly recomended at every level

The welcome was good, cases taken to our room [atmospheric creeky floors in the corridor, and surprisingly low steps on stairs, but of the period, remember Lord Nelson stayed here!]. The room delightful, well furnished and comfortable, with view out on to the road and open square. The food was good, and we availed ourselves of the 2nights plus dinner on the first night. We ate in twice, but felt the menu would not sustain a long stay. The staff were attentive and helpful, and the breakfasts had a good selection, and all freshly prepared, not hot-plate service!

Room Tip: Some rooms have a road going by, but this did not disturb us in any way.

Here for a couple of nights over May Bank Holiday walking in Brecon with lively 8 & 10 yo. Would agree it’s a quirky hotel and all a little haphazard but be assured you always get there in the end. Was a mix up over booking and we didn’t get the room we were expecting but it was amicably resolved to our satisfaction in the end. The beer (proper beer) and food (dinner especially) was excellent and of a very good quality. Staff are all friendly although if you are in a hurry this isn’t the place for you. The rooms are a little tired but comfy and where we were it was lovely and quiet. In summary a nice old hotel, a bit quirky but great food. We would go again.

The hotel food was lovely, traditional pub grub for dinner and a delightful selection for breakfast. We stayed in room 1 (Lady Hamilton) our only let down was the old worn wire frame bed which needs updating. It squeaked on every movement and we both rolled together throughout the night. We had an awful nights sleep, but we were only staying for the one night so didn't complain. Probably best to stay in the standard double or the big suits with proper and new beds!

Room Tip: The superior/ better rooms (more expensive that the standard double) seem to have old and worn wire...

Fantastic hotel cosy but full of charater and history. Staff friendly efficient but not obsequious. Beds felt like floating on clouds. Oh and the food superb. Great location for seeing mid and westWales.
