“A gem of a hotel!”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

We spotted this hotel a few years ago when travelling from the South of Wales to the North. Decided we would come back one day. We spent three nights here, and whilst a bit expensive, it was worth every penny. We had a room overlooking the harbour (perfect for a man mad about boats). Whilst not very big, it felt very luxurious. The bathroom was lovely, and Molton Brown toiletries were the icing on the cake. Will definitely stay here again. Aberaeron is a very picturesque little town and the surrounding area very beautiful.

Room Tip: Most definitely go for a harbour view.

We have stayed at the Harbour master several times in the past and were always pleased with the food and service. Now it is up for sale and the owners appear to have lost interest. We stayed in the Aeron Queen suite (the most expensive room) but were disappointed that the room was so hot when the sun shone and there was no way of airing the room other than by opening the bathroom skylight. The louvre shutters which act in lieu of curtains, were broken in several places and one of the bathroom towel rails fell apart as soon as we moved the towel.
On our first night we ordered the lobster special and my wife ordered the crab cakes as a starter. I had oysters as a starter (big mistake). My wife's crab cakes were like rissoles and so salty as to be inedible and one contained a thumbnail sized piece of crab shell in the first bite(she sent them back). My oysters were not properly separated from the shell and tasted rather odd. During the night I had severe stomach pains and suffered the normal consequences of eating dodgy seafood. The lobster dish was almost inedible and tasted as if the lobster had not been cooked at all, but perhaps this is the way they eat lobsters at the Harbour Master. One other problem is , that they only have butter for the bread and do not offer a low fat alternative of spread, not very healthy for people with a cholesterol problem.
All in all this is not the place it once was, and for the prices charged, does not provide the quality of food and accommodation that one would expect. I hope that the new owners make the effort to restore this quaint hotel to the fine place that it once was.

Room Tip: If you must stay, pick a room with a harbour view and avoid the sea food

On a trip around North Wales this September my partner and I decided to treat ourselves to a night staying in the Aeron Queen room at the Harbourmaster Hotel. Certainly, it was expensive but we wanted to treat ourselves and a treat is precisely what we got. The room is quite possibly the finest I have ever stayed in, it is enormous, the view is stunning, the champagne was delicious, and the bathtub was awesome... I wish I was still in it. After checking into the hotel we went for a short walk around Aberaeron, but even though the town seemed charming, we were anxious to return and enjoy the room. The service was exceptional throughout the hotel, the bar manager was super friendly and offered us a taste of some New Zealand white wine simply because he though we might enjoy it... classy. We ate dinner in the restaurant which was phenomenally good, both of us getting the lobster. Yes, a night here was a treat, but it is definitely a treat everyone should partake in sometime. The only unpleasant part is leaving.

Three weeks ago we went to stay at a well rated on here foodie hotel in Ludlow and left after one night utterly disappointed – not enough hot water for a wallowing bath and we had to use the kettle to top it up many a time, the television did not work and later into the evening one of the chefs was wildly unprofessional. Did not bother to leave a review as the owner never called us despite her being aware of what had happened. At the time I wondered why I simply had not just returned to a place that I knew would be constantly good and this feeling was reinforced yesterday after another great night away at The Harbourmaster. We decided to go on the spur of the moment and as always everything was just perfect. We had a huge room overlooking the harbour which was ideal for people and boat watching, the hot water was piping hot and the evening meal was excellent with service from the young staff both personable and attentive. Thanks to Glyn and his staff for another memorable stay.

Friends had recommended The Harbourrmaster and we were not disappointed with our overnight stay. Car parking in their own car park was a real bonus in this busy little town. A lovely room and spacious bathroom n the original building overlooking the harbour. A warm welcome from the owner and afternoon tea brought to our room within minutes from friendly staff. The bar was buzzing in the evening where we enjoyed a drink before moving into the restaurant for dinner. Very good food, efficient and friendly service in attractively designed surroundings made for a very pleasant experience all round.
Would thoroughly recommend it .

Room Tip: Book a room facing the harbour in the original building
