“Friendly, helpful staff, great freshly cooked fish and chips”
Reviewed 27 September 2012

I must admit to a bias here, as I've been using this chippie for years, and have never had a complaint about it. It was recently closed for a refurbishment, so we tried a recently opened fish and chip shop in the town centre, and whilst we were satisfied with the food, and the cafe area was very well presented, we went straight back to Gillies when it re-opened, as the fish is fresher the portion size is larger, and the prices cheaper. Fish is freshly cooked for every customer, chips are never more than a few minutes out of the frier, and the cooking oil is regularly changed. The staff are friendly and cheerful, always ready for a chat and a joke, and the service is excellent, even at the busiest times you never wait more than a few, say five or six, minutes. It is what it is, a traditional, well-run chippie offering great value for money and quality food, with a clean, small but perfectly acceptable cafe. Traditional British fast food at its best.

“Mick Jagger was right when he sang…”
Reviewed 21 September 2012

I am sure Mick sang "It’s only fish and chips, but I like it" along those lines anyway; it was a long (long) time ago when he sang it!

To eat in: Fish, chips, mushy peas (or garden peas), bread & butter and a pot of tea or coffee for £5.49. For coffee drinkers you get a pot with a couple of mugs of coffee in it; a nice touch, normally it’s only the tea drinkers that get a second cup!

Follow it up with sticky toffee pudding and custard for £1.99.

Don’t go because:
- it’s cheap or
- for a fine dining experience, this is a fish and chip shop café.

Do go because:
- the fish was cooked from fresh and to perfection, something a lot of fish fryers don’t appear to be able to achieve.
- the café is clean and neat (about 8 tables).
- the waiter service is friendly, efficient and fast.

The Rag pudding (beef suet pudding) looked interesting and I would have tried it if we had been in the area for longer.

While in Wales we also ate at the Tyddyn Llan Restaurant a one star Michelin Restaurant, if you want a fine dining experience, eat here. The food, location and setting were excellent.

But I enjoyed the Gillies Plaice meal just as much; that’s because although its only fish and chips, I like it!

“Proper chippy”
Reviewed 13 August 2012

Really good chippy/cafe. Speedy, friendly service.
Lovely fresh fish, great chips and proper mushy peas.
I also enjoyed the rag pudding (lean mince beef in a suet jacket).
