We stayed for four nights at the inn, it’s in a lovely setting close to the hills and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Upon arrival we were informed check in was 4pm not 3pm as per the website and our email confirmation. However, we were offered complementary coffee and the option to leave our bags if needed.
The room was comfortable and generously sized with great views of Snowdon. Fresh biscuits were provided on most days, which was a nice touch. Noticeable absences in the room were a phone and a guest information pack. Although there are leaflets in the hotel, some details about the timing of meals and general hotel and local area information would have been helpful. The bathroom was of a good size with a good shower but there was no toilet roll holder and no hooks for clothing/towels etc. These are not major points but would have added a bit of finesse. The water in the sink drained slowly, on investigation this was due to a large build up of scum deep within the plughole.
The standard of the food was the main area, which reduced the overall enjoyment of our stay. The breakfasts were excellent, good produce, well cooked and buffet style. However, the tables needed a good clean, as they were sticky and tacky to touch.
The evening meals were of a variable standard. On initial inspection the menu had a reasonable range however, we were surprised that the “specials” for the night came from the main menu. The first meal was reasonable but when I had the same meal again three nights later the dish was cooked to a much higher standard with the addition of key ingredients, which with hindsight, had been omitted previously. These included a dressing for the salad, an accompaniment of bread, smoked salmon garnish for the smoked salmon, crayfish and mackerel tian and walnuts in the potato and walnut salad. For the main my lamb came with the addition of gravy, chives in the mash potato and a garnish of radish and salad. You may wonder why I had the same dish twice but because the menu did not change, including the “specials”, during the four nights we stayed we had tried a fair range of the menu options by this point.
On the second night we ordered duck breast and rib eye steak, paying a supplement for the steak. The duck was bland; the fat not rendered down and apart from a piping hot fondant potato the dish was luke warm. The steak was cooked perfectly but was also tepid; the only warm item on the dish was a searingly hot roast tomato. These dishes had obviously been sat in the kitchen sometime before being brought to our table.
The puddings were universally poor. The first night we had crème brulee; curdled, overcooked and with the texture and taste of rubber. We pointed this out and were offered an alternative dessert or coffee, which was a good response by the staff. We took a day before daring to try a pudding again and went for an apple crumble, which was dire. It consisted of apple chunks with the skin left on covered with what looked like muesli and browned to the point of burning in places under the grill. There was no cheeseboard on offer and given the range of good Welsh cheeses this would have been a simple and welcome alternative for some guests.
Other dishes we tried were average and not of the high standard that we had hoped for after reading the website and other reviews. Maybe we just caught them on a bad week.
We appreciate this is a small village inn and for an evening meal for one night would be a good option but over a longer period, the lack of variability, in all but the cooking standard, we feel it was not up to it’s four star rating.
