“Good Food”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

We visited the restaurant last night. Y Branwen looked a lovely place to stay but we only wanted to eat on this occasion. The bar area was welcoming and there was a good range of beers. What struck us was the happy atmosphere, some residents, some visitors and locals mixing together well. Substantial portions of good food served by cheerful staff, who checked if we were happy with our dishes. We recommend the fish and chips, very tasty especially with the addition of balsamic vinegar. The Camembert starter was lovely as we're the tempura King Prawns........all very good. It was a good idea to give some guidance on the wine list and the Chilean red was inexpensive but excellent. Shame we could visit only once.

“Fantastic little place”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

I was a little put off by the outside but it's definitely a must and we were annoyed that we only went there on our last night. The staff couldn't do enough for you and the food was good home cooked pub grub. I would definitely recommend booking as it was very busy.

“Best place in Harlech for a short stay and for 'basic' meals”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

We eat here as our first choice for non-ethnic food (as opposed to the excellent Harlech Tandoori and the 'Armoury' Caribbean). I suspect those who found the staff unhelpful 'don't get it' - or perhaps may not start on a friendly basis themselves. The interesting aspect of Y Branwen is the negotiation for a table. You have to book but it needs a little patience. The usual dialogue goes: Q: Have you a table for two this evening? A: What time? Q: 7.30? A: Hmmm, I'll have to just check that . . . . no, sorry, we can't do 7.30. Q: How about 8 o'clock? A; Hmmm, sorry that's a bit difficult. Q: What time do you suggest? A: Hmmm, I'll just check . . . . . could you come at 7.45?
Having enjoyed this routine several times I can only assume that the chef and the maître d' have (a) strict rules about how many people can be served concurrently and (b) need to be asked.
Still, if you have a sense of humour after they've given you this routine on several visits they and you can enjoy a laugh together about it!

“Y Branwell - Excellent Restaurant”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

I would certainly suggest booking prior to your visit if you can, it is very popular place. This is quite a small restaurant that is integral to the Hotel. The food is of a really good quality and there is plenty of space between the tables, so you're not squashed in with your guests. The staff are very welcoming and provide a great service. Of course, when in Wales you must have the lamb!

“Lovely Food”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

What a shame we only tried the Y Branwen on our last night! The food was cooked to perfection. I had Camembert to start followed by chicken. Another person in our party had the butternut squash and carrot soup - delicious - followed by a very tender steak. Dessert portions were a bit on the small side but I didn't have one as I'd had sufficient to eat. There was a children's menu. Everything was very clean and the decor was very good. The staff were friendly, helpful and patient. We weren't ready when they came to take our order as some of the party had been playing darts (in the bar area)- not a problem at all. The waiter caught my eye 5 minutes later and quietly asked if we were ready. Also a child in our party was asked if he wanted gravy - he said no then part way through the meal changed his mind - again not a problem. The waiters were attentive without being fussy. We felt very relaxed and we weren't under any pressure to vacate our tables.
About £16 for 2 courses - steak more expensive. I'm surprised it wasn't busier for a Friday night. If we visit Harlech again the Y Branwen will definitely be our first choice for eating out.
