“A dinner that makes you feel so special and cared for”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2011

We own a property in Talybont North Wales and have suffered so many disappointments on our evenings out. This little restaurant has all it takes and it sure will be moving forward in the future if they keep the special touches they have introduced. A family running a very special venu- to make you feel that you are out after a weeks work and much of what I take from that feeling is that those little touches are what makes the difference. This little restaurant does what every restaurant should strive for in North Wales - local produce cooked to perfection. This proprietor chef knows you cannot produce a good meal without good ingredients that are respected from his local source and being Irish there is not nothing like a Welsh perfectly cooked steak - well we share the Irish sea lol. Definately worth all the work involved in rearing Welsh Black cattle. A friendly and tasteful experience with food served in a calm atmosphere . Full Marks to all of you - Thankyou Mr & Mrs Monico would like to say don't change you have got it just right x Take yourself there and experience the true tast of North Wales -Heaven x Thankyou x We will be back xxx

Just got back from a weekend stay at the Castle Cottage Rooms."

We are quite picky but this was a great place to stay.
The room (6) was perfect for us - contemporary decor, large, comfortable bed, beautiful bathroom with a massive shower and spotlessly and even fresh fruit in the bowl.
While we didn't eat dinner in the restaurant the breakfast was tasty with lots of fresh fruit, yoghurts and cereals plus the option of various hot food - cooked to order.

As for parking- while the spaces outside the front door were taken there was plenty of free on road parking a few metres away or you could park in the castle car park (£4 for 24 hrs) which was also only a few metres away.

All in all, we couldn't fault it and I am sure we will return!

Hi Chef-ee conwy
Thank you for such a positive review of castle cottage - and coming from a chef who knows the joys ( and hassles) of running a hospitality business, your praise is very much appreciated. We are glad you enjoyed the food and evening with us. Sorry about the rain, it is hot and sunny here today in Harlech. Hope to see you soon.

We have written a couple of reviews of Castle Cottage Harlech, and have returned twice since our last review. We have made the 600 mile round-trip more times than we can remember over the last 6 years: a place we have been to celebrate; to recuperate; to escape for relaxation; or simply for no reason other than it's one of our favourite places. We spent the 2010/2011 New Year at Castle Cottage, what a great way to start the year.

Glynn and Jacqueline (and family/staff) are the perfect hosts. They offer excellent accommodation and a fantastic service. The food is consistently excellent, more of a dining experience than simply having dinner. (I prefer Castle Cottage to many of the top London restaurants I have visited!) We always look forward to canapes in the bar with a beer/glass of wine/G&T. Add that to the experience of being at Castle Cottage and the view across Snowdonia while you enjoy pre-dinner drinks and canapes, and you get near to perfect. Dinner in the restaurant never fails to please. Excellent food and decent wine.

We like staying in room 3 (Caernafon), also stayed room 7 (Harlech). Both very spacious. Harlech is a great place to stay, with the vast beach and places to walk. We have recently discovered the walks around Harlech, and walked to its highest point. Well worth investing £5 in a local walking guide that you can pick up from the Post Office in town.

We often read with much amusement the minority of negative comments about Castle Cottage. We are hugely fussy about where we stay (in particular food, beds, people) and cannot relate to the objections raised about Castle Cottage. If you are thinking of going to Castle Cottage, we can honestly say you can go with confidence that you are visiting what is possibly one of the best places. We can only think that those who do not like Castle Cottage are possibly some of those people who we have at times wished were not there...... !

We could not fault Castle Cottage, and can't wait to return.... again.

We had been recommended the Castle Cottage by a good friend who's recommendations I trust as this is his line of employment, and from reading all the excellent reviews we were both looking forward to a lovely evening celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. We arrived at 7.25, and were promptly told that we were late, that our booking had been made for 7 o clock. I pleasantly informed our host that I made the booking myself for 7.30. We were then served drinks by a very unsmiling lady and left to browse the menu. To cut a long story short, the food was good though overpriced at £38 per person, but the atmosphere and the service was unfriendly and uncaring to say the least, and the place only had 4 tables eating at the time. You felt as though you were sitting in someone's rather formal front room and had to speak in hushed voices as the other tables were very close by. My husband was made to feel a nuisance when he asked for a glass of wine with his food, and all this left a sour taste so we decided to leave without desserts, although the menu was given to us but we were then left for what seemed an age, before we had enough and went to the bar to pay...minus desserts. The same unsmiling lady promptly appeared and asked if she could help. She didn't ask once if everything was okay or had we enjoyed our food or our time with them, which she had plenty of time to do as I paid with the card machine. It was awkward to say the least as she took the money and we ran. We won't be coming back to Castle Cottage again for fear of being insulted by whom we assume to be the owner again. Maybe they were annoyed with us for not turning up at 7, or maybe she was having a bad night...who knows....a smile goes a long way regardless in my book.

Dear Dissapointed cuzamanos
I took your booking over the phone and wrote in the diary the time you asked for ( you asked what time we opened, I said 7pm, you said that's fine)
Glad you thought our food was good - but overpriced????? canapes, appetiser, home made bread with Welsh organic butter, starter, main course (with veg etc) and pudding. We always try and buy our food locally or from Welsh producers.
With all the costs of running a restaurant ( food purchases, wages, rates, gas, electric, Insurance, NI and 20%VAT) we are lucky to get a net profit of £3.80 - you obviously don't run your own business!!
Ive never heard our dining room be likened to a 'front room' before - bizarre, and our table spaces are no different to any other (except in a large city were they cram you in and only give you a limited time at the table) Would i be right to presume you don't eat our very often - just on anniversaries?

After giving a table the pudding menu we always give you some time to choose, as most normal customers like to have a little rest after the main course - you could have asked to order if you were in a hurry
My wife was probably not 'chatty' with you because she thought you had had an argument with your other half and did not appear to be the talkative type

We were recommended the Castle Cottage as we were attending a nearby wedding - and arrived a day early. Despite a long journey from London, and arriving after the owners had started preparing dinner, we were welcomed in and quickly settled in.
Dinner is excellent and plentiful - especially all the extra bits like canapes. We were still fairly full by breakfast the next morning!
Harlech itself is a charming medieval town and as long as you don't mind steep slopes, it's well worth walking down to the beach. Even on a Saturday in June we pretty had the beach to ourselves.
The room we were in (room 7) is enormous, with a great view of the Castle and beyond . It's been tastefully restored and well decorated.
Even mailing our hairdryer back (which we left behind) was no bother to the owners. We'll certainly be back next time we're in this beautiful part of Wales!

Room Tip: Room 7 is enormous and with great views

We have been visiting castle cottage for years, as we are fortunate to live quite near, sometimes we just eat but often we stay to enjoy the beautiful accommodation and so we can both savour the fabulous wines always on offer.
Castle cottage is our favourite place to eat of anywhere and believe me we get about a bit and are avid foodies. We regularly entertain guests at the hotel and always recommend as the best place to stay and eat in the area, we have stayed at Portmeirion, Maes y Neuadd and other supposed upmarket establishments nearby and castle cottage leaves them all wanting, this opinion is always endorsed by everyone we have ever recommended
there. How this is not the number one place to stay in the locality and beyond I do not understand. Great food , spectacular rooms and unpretentious hosts - keep up the good work
