“Excellent food - next time, we stay too!”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

There seems to be no option to leave a restaurant review for The Hand elsewhere but as food usually plays an important part in any hotel stay I shall leave comment here!

First off, just to say that Llanarmon is a charming and character-filled remote village and the arrival is spectacularly beautiful whichever way you approach. The Hand itself is a lovely building with a nice spacious bar area and a most attractive restaurant. A warm relaxed welcome adds to the appealing ambience.

So the food? Quite simply first rate. We chose starters of Perl Las cheese brûlée and Duck pakora. The pakora was flavoursome, balanced and nicely presented. Possibly the brûlée required just a little more flavour but it was very enjoyable indeed and an excellent concept. Our mains selections of duck with belly pork and lamb cutlets accompanied by perfectly cooked vegetables, mashed potatoes and fluffy centred chips were more or less sublime! Excellent meat expertly cooked. The cassis onions served with the lamb deserve special merit as being both an inspired, unusual idea and a roaring success! All the food was just simply 'right' in that seemingly effortless way that only a good kitchen can achieve.

Highly recommended! We feel sure you will enjoy the journey to Llanarmon and the experience and food when you arrive at The Hand. We plan to stay a day or two the next time we visit so we can do it all over again and for longer!

We live fairly locally (less than 10 miles away) and The Hand is always our first choice to eat. Lovely atmosphere and great food (especially the pies). Can't comment on the rooms but whether you eat in the restaurant or bar it's the food is certainly worth it and there's a good range of beers and wines too. Highly recommended.

Just returned from a 3 night break at this hotel. We've visited for meals many times but this is the first time we've stayed there. Lovely big room with wonderful views over the fields. Really warm welcome and fabulous food throughout our stay. Great to be able to bring the dog. Love that there's no mobile phone signal! Highly recommended

Enjoyed a nice midweek lunch here recently. The hotel is situated down a b-road, well off the beaten track, but with pretty scenery. There is an attractive restaurant and 2 bar areas. They had a good choice of local ales and a varied menu.
I can recommend the gammon and chicken pie - very tasty. My partner enjoyed the scampi. The service was very good, however they lost a mark for me when the owner arrived after walking his dogs and allowed them to roam freely in the bar while customers were eating. Why do some dog owners assume everyone likes dogs ?

We stayed as a couple with our dog for two nights. The pub is set in the very remote village of Llarnarmon. We were greeted by a young girl on reception who was very helpful and gave us some ideas of where to walk during our stay. It's great that the pub takes dogs although the only downside with the area is that there aren't many fields/woodland you can let the dog off the lead and walk through. We borrowed a book of walking routes from the bar but this seemed outdated as most of the routes we tried to take were closed off. As there weren't many walking routes we could find we ended up driving to snowdonia and walking here - throughly recommended but quite a way from the pub. Food was very nice but they could do with some more 'light bite' options for the summer eg salads and fish. One thing to bear in mind here is that the walls are VERY thin. Unfortunately on our second night the couple in the room next door left their dog in the room for the evening when they went down for dinner and the bar. The dog barked all evening and kept us from having an early night in preparation for our 4 hour drive home. Take some ear plugs just in case you are also placed next to inconsiderate guests! Overall friendly owners and staff and a room that did the job.

My husband and I stayed at the Hand Inn for two nights for a short break. The Inn is situated in the glorious vale of Dyffryn Ceiriog., in a small, charming village called Llanarmon. After arriving late afternoon we were greeted and shown into our sunny and spacious bedroom. The next couple of days were spent in enjoying the food and friendly service of the staff. It is prime walking area with glorious scenery in every direction you walk from the Inn. We will certainly be returning to this charming and peaceful place.

The hotel is ok but staff very good. The room was dated but large. Located in small town with a good parking. Good for a nights stay. Not much to do longer unless you leave town and visit the country side and other villages. The countryside is really nice and the people are cool.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hand is an ancient hostelry with all the attributes you'd expect - bags of character, a cosy, relaxing ambience and a warm welcome from your hosts, Jonathan and Jackie Greatorex. As soon as you arrive you feel the weight of the world dissolving as the surroundings work their magic. All the classic ingredients are here - old beams, roaring fireplaces, a casual mix-and-match of pine and oak furniture, real ale and good food. The latter is seriously good. Thanks to the talents of Head Chef Grant Mulholland and his team, The Hand is renowned for award-winning food, an inventive marriage of country fare and sophisticated metropolitan cuisine. The bedrooms, in a variety of sizes, reflect similar influences, with rustic decor and sparkling modern bathrooms. Country lovers just love the location. You can walk in the Berwyns for hours with only the sheep for company and the ever-helpful Hand can arrange many country pursuits, including horse riding, fishing and shooting. You may be away from it all, but you'll also be in the swing of things; this gem of a country inn is so much a part of village life that locals and visitors mix in unaffected harmony. ... more   less
