Pontin's Prestatyn Sands Holiday Park

Like other people have said i to was dreading this break due to the reviews i had read,so glad we gave it a chance. We got checked in at 2 o,clock, instead of 4, received a free upgrade without asking and i must say the chalet was fine couldn't hear anything through the walls from our neighbours.I have a two year old and a ten year old who both enjoyed the play areas and pool,ok the main building as seen better days but this is been dealt with.
Thumbs up to the staff, on asking at reception, late at night, for extra pillows i didn't hold out much hope but not long after 4 pillows were brought to our chalet, been to 5* star hotels and have to beg for pillows so i was very happy. All in all a holiday is what you make it but i would definatley return to pontins and wales which is very beautiful.

After reading reviews we tried to cancel this sun break but because of the 56 day clause they would not budge. We were absolutely dreading what we would find when we got there. We upgraded to club apartment on half board and the first benefit to this was not having to queue. Straight to the front. We had also paid for 2 extra nights and they had not put us in the same room but the reception staff sorted this out and we went to find our apartment with anticipation. On opening the patio door we were pleasantly surprised as the room was relatively clean and beds made up. We already knew about the leather sofa bed and had taken a double air bed to sit on top. Heating was adequate and all in all not bad. We unpacked and made our way to the diner! To get there you had to walk into the main entertainment area and we were hit by an old, musty, dirty carpet smell. Also to my surprise they had tiered seating opposite the stage and it felt like we were at a rugby match. We didn't spend any time in that room at all. Back to the diner.......canteen is being kind.......terrible food.......customers had no manners, didn't know how to eat with a knife and fork.......awful. They regularly ran out of cutlery and I felt sorry for the staff trying to cope with mess people left....... DON'T EVER GO HALF BOARD.....the entertainment was poor......bluecoats ok but they only know how to speak to the kids.........pub was ok with a quiz every night and selective football on large screen........swimming pool ok.......facilities for kids ok but for under 10s really. As I said you get what you pay for APART from the food which was poor quality and hardly any nutrition apart from some wilting salad!

Have stayed at a few Pontin's, but first time at Prestatyn.

Whilst the location is very good, the same can't be said about the state of the holiday park.

Checking in was fine, we managed to avoid the masses, so checked in within a couple of minutes.

The room we were in was the basic room, which for us is not usually a problem as we don't tend to spend much time in the chalet, just somewhere to sleep. However they failed to leave us with duvets and pillows etc, so was a long wait just to ask someone to come and drop some off.

The 'Bed Settee' was dreadful, it kept toppling over, and was very uncomfortable, we weren't the only ones this happened too, some people resorted to letting the kids sleep on the double bed settee whilst they slept in the single beds.

The park is falling apart, building crumbling, carpets in the entertainment areas thread bare, There was litter all over the place, including used condoms and sanitary products. Rubbish is even left dumped around the arcade and entertainment areas and for a day or two at a time was just left there.

Entertainment itself is nothing special, don't expect Butlin's type entertainment, two good shows whilst we were there and one was Wrestling, blue coats hardly around other than when in a show or a poor attempt of getting people involved. Maybe we've been spoilt by other park providers over the years and even other Pontins, but you just didn't get that holiday feeling.

The food onsite is awful, the fish shop, not only expensive but poor quality, poor fish, poor sausage, poor fries, slow serving staff, close too early, don't have enough stock. Similar can be said for the chicken / burger take-away.

Thankfully less than a mile away (near the railway station) is an Aldi, Iceland and Home Bargains, bit further afield another supermarket.

We had a rotten front door and part of it fell away, all the week we were there it still never got fixed.

The outdoor play area was very good.

The swimming pool was decent, however the changing rooms are awful, falling apart, doors missing on cubicles, showers cold, floor always wet. We had our swimming things on before hand, so just stripped off at the pool-side and then when we did use the changing rooms to get changed did so ask quickly as possible and then had to finish of drying feet at poolside where it was less wet than the changing room. This area needs renovating, maybe get rid of cubicles if they can't be kept in a good state, create a family changing area too.

Had a week at Pontins Prestatyn with my 3 kids for half term week.
Arrived just before 2pm and joined the masses waiting to check in.
3 check in windows open so not much of a wait.
Handed my keys and told where to go. I was told to park anywhere on the road then walk to the chalet. I don't think the person had taken much notice of my booking as we had a club chalet so could park more or less outside our place.

The area in front of the chalet was a grassed area with a set of goal posts and a basketball net for the kids.
I did notice that there was a lot of rubbish on the ground. It was a windy day so the odd crisp packet was to be expected but there was a couple of dirty sheets and a swing bin lid right outside my chalet door.
Went inside to a "dated" chalet. The floor looked like it hadn't seen a brush for a while. Kitchen area and bathroom were clean (but I always wipe down with anti bac spray before use).
Beds were made up ready for us so I had a quick check of sheets etc to make sure they were clean.
Loads of hot water available for baths and showers. A previous comment has mentioned the height of the shower head being too low....I'm 5 ft 10 and could get under ours no problem.
Yes the baths are small but space is limited.

Went to use the toaster on the first night and it kept tripping the electrics out. Took it to customer services the next morning and they replaced it with a brand new one the next day.

Walked through the club and arcade during the daytime and noticed immediately how dirty the carpets are (they stank!)
Went to the club for Halloween night to find the place full to bursting.... No free tables. Bought drinks for myself and the kids and was shocked at the prices....a lot more then I thought.
Kids didn't see overly impressed with the entertainment on offer so headed back to watch telly in the chalet.
The tv had a fault. Every time you turned it off you would have to scan fir channels again...not a major problem so we lived with it.

Went to find out where the on site launderette was to be told there isn't one! Surely that's a basic requirement for such a big park.
Went to one in Prestatyn and was told by the lady there that they have loads from Pontins go there....a nice little earner for her!!

To sum up:-
Yes the site is dated and dirty in places but if you get it cheap like we did (£95 for club apartment Half term week) it's not as bad as some people make out.
The place is in desperate need of money spending on it to take it up to the standard it should be.

Would I stay there again? Yes.... To use as a base. I don't think I would get one of the lower spec chalets though as the club ones looked that little bit fresher!

Firstly let me say that we only paid £140 for a midweek break during the half term holidays, staying in Club accommodation.

Easy check in, (2pm for Club residents),
Found our room no problem and moved all our belongings from the carpark outside with ease.

Room basic, but wooden flooring a definate improvement on the usual carpet, Lino in the bathroom looked new and clean.
Booked a 1 bedroom apartment as the wife and I didn't want single beds.
Our daughters' room had bunk beds and a single in them so they were more than happy.
Couch/sofa bed was comfy as a couch but a little slim for 2 adults to sleep on but I managed ok.
The facilities themselves are good, £3 a pint was nice (compared to £4:30 at Haven), we never ate at the chippy or the restaurant, did a big supermarket shop when we 1st arrived, Asda is 6 miles away.
The soft play area is a great place for little ones, and the outdoor park is fantastic and looks brand new !
There was no graffiti on it and the bark chips mean no danger of injuries.
The mini golf is looking a bit run down and could do with sprucing up.

Swimming pool is a great size, very deep at the deep end! With a little pool for youngsters.
Changing rooms aren't the best and could also do with a sprucing up.

Never used the room attached to the queen vic pub, the pub is great though.

The main entertainment room is large enough with a stand of seats in case all tables are full !
They usually are full, we saw people getting into the club at 4:30 to get seats at the front!
Entertainment was very good, bluecoats entertain very well and include the kids, only downside was the bingo, not a fan and the constant requests for quiet were annoying( it's the family room, kids everywhere and arcade next door!)
Maybe this should be situated in another room!

No bad neighbours so nice and quiet when putting kids to bed, nice grassed area in front of accommodation with a football goal on it to keep the kids happy!

Patents had a problem with their door lock but maintenance had fixed this within the hour.

All in all we had a great time away, we didn't pay a fortune so we didn't expect 5 star facilities.
The place needs money spending on it, decor is a bit shabby in places, but signs of improvement all around from our last visit.
Most complaint is other residents but that isn't Pontins fault that some people have no manners or act like idiots !

Before we travelled to Pontins I had a couple of questions so I tried calling loads of times unable to get through to anyone, in the end the call centre gave me the number to SECURITY!! on the main gate which was great the man was lovely and very helpful but surely this is NOT his job??? Anyway my questions answered which one was do they hire bed guards.. the answer is NO if that's helpful to anyone. We arrived at Pontins early around 1.30pm decided to go and see if the keys were ready even though our actual check in was not until 4pm. They weren't and we were told to try again after 2.30pm. We spent a little time with the children on the play park outside, which they seemed to enjoy and was clean and tidy, lovely area for them :) After waiting in a major que to get the keys we finally get them a little early too although some were not ready and being sent away after waiting for ages but we cant really complain about this is check in is after 4pm? Anyway we went to find our chalet which wasnt too far away and had plenty of parking close to - we could see our car from our chalet. Ours was 663. We had two single beds in a bedroom, bathroom and a kitchen, living room etc all in one. Sofa bed was leather pull out thing which was alright to sit on but a little uncomfy for sleeping on however they are better than others i have stayed at. Although basic - you get what you pay for... the chalet was very CLEAN!!! the only thing i can say wasnt clean was the kitchen sink but it wasnt horribly dirty?? The bathroom was very dated and blue lol but i have to say my first impressions were changed as the week went on, the bathroom grew on me and i even managed a bath lol, we didnt have a shower though!!! The kids were happy the older one whose 5 took a bed in the bedroom and my little one whose almost 2 slept on a blow up bed next to us. How people can say its cold i will never know! We had a heater in the main room and one in the bedroom, you are given £20 electric which is more than enough for the week! We left the heaters on all night and turned them off it got too hot!? The bedroom one didnt work as well as the living room but the kids slept through so im happy! Our TV a tiny thing wasnt picking up a very good reception and didn't have a scart socket it was that old (we take the dvd player with us so we couldnt use it) We asked at reception if anything could be done to improve the picture for the kids and they sent a man round that evening who fixed it for the evening and then replaced the whole tv for a bigger better one with a scart socket lol that was by chance though but better for us, so well done pontins on that note :) We went to the fun factory one evening as out kids dont tend to enjoy it much but it seemed ok up there clean etc.. The arcade could do with updating too but again i think it is being done gradually as it seemed every other chalet had new windows and doors where the other (including ours) we still wooden frames and doors. We didnt try the pool so i cant comment although they do have lifeguards there. We did sample the chip shop which I though was nice and reasonable price wise but my hubby wasnt impressed with frozen chips from there!! I dont think we will bother with any pontins holidays again after visiting two now and not being overly impressed with either I much prefer Haven sites myself. Hope this helps a little.
