“Poor and Unimpressive”
Reviewed 7 June 2010

I booked this hotel on line and with a lack of options of other places to stay took a risk.................I wish I'd been more conservative or stayed elsewhere !!

Previous reviewers have mentioned the decor and lack of any recent rennovation and they are certainly accurate on that score ! Moreover I would like to take issue with the suggestions of the quality of the rooms with names like premier, superior, etc as they are certainly none of these. My room's general decor was very old fashioned, but most importantly very shabby, with black marks around toilets,etc,.. It would appear that the owners were trying to do everything themselves which in such a large building is nye on impossible. I must agree with a previous reviewer this hotel might be appropriate for someone much older or a dog lover. The breakfast was enjoyable and plentiful

Found hotel through tourist brochure. Choice was limited to Bank Holiday. Booked by phone and was offered "a premier room". On arrival noticed shabby facade, with little indication of the hotel name. On entering the lobby overwhelmed by stale cooking smells and underwhelmed by the tired and shabby appearance of the decor. Greeted by owner and when we enquired about an evening meal, was told due to a group booking, they could not accommodate us till after 8 pm but told us there were plenty of restaurants in the town. So much for a warm welcome!
On viewing our "premier room", we were horrified to discover a large hole in the wall near the window, signs of water damage to ceiling with sagging paper, curtains that did not fit the windows. In the bathroom there wasa very loose toilet seat which was also too small for the toilet bowl, a cracked cistern, vinyl floor covering which was very uneven, the shaver light over the handbasin did not work. The general cleanliness was also not what one expects in this day and age.
On the plus side breakfast was good, despite the fact that we were served in the "sun lounge" where again the general condition of the decor showed signs of damp and neglect. However, we did see the dolphins from the window!
As we had booked for 2 nights, and with the lack of available alternative accommodation, we put up with the conditions.
At the end of our stay, like one of the previous reviews, we reported our disappointment and dissatisfaction, and were amazed at the owners response who denied all knowledge of the condition of the room. No apology, or offer of reduction in tarrif.
Needless to say, we will not be returning to the Marine Hotel.

Wonderful four days spent at the marine hotel after a very bad few months just what the dr ordered. We where made to feel very welcome by both the owners and the locals and nothing was to much trouble. The hotel was obviously being decorated stage by stage but could not fault, the room was spacios the castle suit from which we did have a very clear view of the castle and sea. The previous reviewer made a lot of negative comments about problems within the room we had none of these and the steam coming from the bathroom would lead me to believe that a little more care should be taken, i do not believe this is an issue within this hotel but could happen in any hotel from budget to luxery if care not taken. As previously mentioned the constantly barking dog is a bit of an exageration as we are the owners of the dog who only barked when a very misserable young man was storming in and out of the entrance, whilst we where having our breakfast which we remeber quite clearly as we laughed about it as it totally out of charecter. We enjoyed our time at the hotel so much we are returning in two weeks and this time our friends are coming with us .

The couple who run this hotel were lovely however sadly the decor and lack of any recent rennovation certainly leaves a lot to be desired. We stayed in room 15, we paid the extra for a sea view, this sadly consisted of a flat roof which was built up with bricks on all sides and a sky satelite dish, certainly no view of the sea, however we did see a lovely sunset over the top of the roof at some point. The room itself had clearly suffered from some sort of leak which looked to have been repaired but was still very obvious. There appeared to be black mould on the ceiling and some evidence of damp problems, there was a large crack on the wall by the bed- which incidently had a very wobbly headboard which was being held up by a pillow. The light fitting had cracks all around and a visible electric cable, the general decor was very old fashioned- the curtains might have looked ok in 1985 but in 2010, sadly not. We even managed to set the fire alarm off by taking a quick 5 minute shower after accidentally leaving the door slightly ajar. We could also hear constant barking from a dog staying within the hotel. Got this from lastminute.com, which we use regularly and sadly we have had far better value and quality with every other offering. We were 27 and 30 however, this might be appropriate for someone much older or a dog lover perhaps but just wasnt for us. The breakfast was lovely though

We went for a break between xmas and new year but were made so welcome by the owners Gaynor and Martin that we decided to stay on for the new years eve celebrations. We also took our dog Riley who was made more than welcome and would have been accommodated in the sun lounge at mealtimes if necessary. Good bar in the evenings plenty of banter with the locals pets welcome bearing in mind locals also take their dogs in.[ just in case your dog is a snob ] Good evening meal if required good choice and plenty of it .Good size comfortable room with splendid views of castle and sea. This was not our first visit and look forward to going back soon.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel in September and absolutely loved it. The location is absolutely spot on, we had room 18 with an amazing view of the castle and the sea to the right of us. The room was spacious, there was a plentiful supply of tea/coffee making facilities and the bed was incredibly comfortable which is rare in a hotel. The breakfast was spot on with good service and the owners of this hotel are incredibly friendly and made us feel very welcome, so much so in fact, that we are returning at the end of this month. I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone.

Fabulous sea views from lounge and conservatory.Breakfast was lovely everything piping hot, really enjoyable. We had a lovely stay so thankyou to all the staff who made us feel very welcome and hopefully see you all again soon, I would certainly recommend this hotel. Criccieth is a great place to stay !!!
