I picked this hotel for a short break with my elderly mother (I hope she doesn't read that!) I know Criccieth as my partner, me and our dog stayed there in a self catering cottage last year and it's an excellent location and a pretty little town and beach.

Overall the hotel was very good. There is on site parking, though your chances might be slim if you arrived in the evening. There is an extremely comfortable reception / lounge area, a bar, dining room and outside lawn and patio area. All the staff were extremely friendly and courteous.... including the cat that works reception! Our room was good, though maybe the decor was a little tired. Carpets were clean, good quality linen, clean white towels and a very big bathroom. For £89 a night we thought it good value.

The dining room menu was perhaps a little dated and not very adventurous. We ate in the bar and the quality was fine. Very big portions too. We were also quite impressed with the breakfast which was served buffet style. There was fresh juice, fruit, cereal, porridge. You could also help yourself to sausage, bacon, tomatoes, beans, fried and scrambled eggs. You could also order boiled or poached eggs and kippers from the kitchen. Toast and tea and coffee were served at the table.

We both really enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: See if you can get a first floor room over looking The Green (there is a lift)

We stayed here for 3 nights in order to visit Portmerion. The building is and old one but well maintained, Another block has been built behind it in the car park at the back. We were greeted with a warm smile and found all the staff helpful, kindly and efficient. The main lounge/reception was a victorian triumph with comfy leather wing chairs and chesterfield sofas, large heavy fireplaces (which I would imagine would make it very cosy in winter with a fire in them), heavy gold framed pictures on the walls, big lamps and chandeliers. A doorway to the bar led off to one end which was a busy spot but not too noisy. They held a quiz in there one night and bargain bar meals were available there. At the other end of the main reception hall was the dining room - a symphony in pink! We had breakfast and dinner there each day and found the quality and choice to be superb, perfectly cooked with a change of menu daily. We enjoyed live singers in there each evening, but not sure if they are a daily event. Our room was at the front of the hotel so we had a lovely view down the village and across the bay. The bed was very comfortable and everywhere was spotless. The new en-suite shower room was modern, recent. The only problem was that the Saniflo unit was grumbly - we could hear everyone else's nearby too and there was a faint, strange smell in the room. That said, we didn't find it a problem and never lost sleep over it. It just cost them their extra point! I would recommend the Lion for anyone needing a base in the area, it seemed to be the most happening place in the village. Criccieth is a very sleepy place with pebbly beaches and a castle. The Ffestiniog Railway at Porthmadoc was about 10 minutes drive away and the same distance to Portmerion, which I can highly recommend. Black Rock Sands is the nearest beach accessed by a long, winding, unsigned lane, is worth the time to visit - miles of golden sand - you drive along the beach, It's ideal for kite surfing, sand sailing, and sailboarding, and of course long walks in the surf! Wonderful! Go and enjoy!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with sea view at the front,

Stayed in Criccieth a couple of years ago and had several nice meals in the Lion Hotel. We were on holiday in Nefyn, but decided to visit Criccieth and the Lion Hotel last week. The hotel/restaurant had been refurbished to a high standard. We ordered a meal and the service and the food were both excellent. We can thoroughly recommend it. The weather was excellent and we noticed that the beer garden was full of families enjoying the sun. We did not have to wait long for our food considering the hotel was busy. Lovely atmosphere and will revisit when we stay in Criccieth in September.

Arrival at the Lion was disappointing because the hotel brochure photograph appears to show gardens right in front, the picture having been taken from a very low angle, whereas they are actually across the road. The car park is at the rear and entrance to the hotel, from the rear, is down a flight of narrow steps. Better or easier to enter from the front.
Once inside we were met by friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant was excellent and the room warm and the beds comfortable. There is wifi but not on the 3rd floor.
Would happily stay there again.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Our original booking allowed us to choose between a sea view and an inland view. Our booking was for a sea view but when we arrived we were told that all bookings were the same. There was an attempt to get us different rooms but none were available. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean on the whole but need some TLC. The restaurant was OK but not brilliant. It looks like they are catering for the more senior citizen and the menu is made accordingly. The bar is well stocked but is also used by the locals. This wasn't a problem for us but we witnessed an elderly couple run the gauntlet of a group of young locals behaving boisterously and swearing profusely. Whilst I understand why the bar needs to encourage locals trade it's far from ideal.

Room Tip: Don't go for rooms on the first floor above the bar.

We have just had four nights at the Lion with a tour company and we had a great time. The staff were very helpful and effiecent and the food was excellent. We were roomed in the annex which is across the car park, which wasn't a problem, but the noise from the floor of the room above was. Whoever was in there did a route march at bedtime every night and the noise was awful. The room was also a bit on the cramped side, but we didn't spend too much time there, so we managed.
We wouldn't have any qualms about going there again.

Room Tip: If you have to go in the annex ask for an upstairs room, it will be quieter

Good helpful staff. Did not stay here, just had drinks in pub garden as it was sunny. The inside main bar was modern with log burner, and had friendly staff. Reception were helpful regarding the free wifi except it did not range as far as the beer garden which was a bit annoying, but not a big killer .... Because the beer garden was a lovely sun trap and peaceful. Would recommend. Prices were a bit dearer here than the regular pubs but you'd expect that. Please note we did not stay in a room, we stayed in b&b down the road
