“2 day stay for friends' wedding”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Stayed at the Lion hotel for 2 nights to attend a friends wedding. 1st impressions of the hotel was that it could do with a little tlc. Our room was spacious enough and we had lovely views from our 2 windows but unfortunately the decor needed modernising. The bathroom was lovely and modern so I think work is in progress. Did feel that the £90 a night was a little expensive. I felt very sorry for the guests staying in the room below ours as the floor boards were extremely creaky. The shower enclosure was very small and the shower arm would not hold the shower steady so it would constantly twist around or drop. The mattress was extremely hard and uncomfortable so had distrupted sleep from waking with dead hips and legs. The staff were friendly enough and the breakfast choices were good. Found the cooked breakfast nice but a little too greasy for my liking. Did ask 2 different members of staff for more toast which never arrived and 1 even sighed at us and took our side plates away. However on the 2nd morning my husband wasn't feeling very well and couldn't face the dining room so they kindly allowed me to take toast and tea upstairs to him. An average stay. Would probably look to stay somewhere else if we were to return to the beautiful little village of criccieth.

Room Tip: lovely views from front bedrooms at top of hotel.

I was on a coach Holiday up from Plymouth for 5 days staying at this hotel. The hotel was in a good location.Very disappointed with hotel annex room 43 to cramped could not drink the water in room bed to big for room upstairs floor boards creaking .Every thing else at the hotel was very good.

Room Tip: don't have room 43.

Stayed 2 nights in this hotel in the centre of town. Our room was outside the main hotel adjacent to the car park. The room was small and as others have said in need of some TLC. The main income for the hotel seems to be coach parties containing senior citizens which really sets the scene. On one night there was entertainment which consisted of a mature person strumming on his guitar with songs from the appropriate era. We found the food to be good although presentation at breakfast could have been better. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. All in all not a bad stay.

An old picturesque coaching inn built in the first half of the eighteenth century, which clearly enjoyed a certain good reputation in the good old days and capitalized on it, but would not be able compete with more modern hotels and B&B in a place other than Criccieth, which is a tourist centre predominantly for pensioners. Our room was clean and decent, but rather dusty, and would definitely benefit from a general refurbishment (wall paper in the bathroom, for instance). Bed was comfy. Overall, not worth the 71£ we paid, in my opinion. Also, I had never seen a hotel taking 2/3 deposit prior to one's arrival. Service was good though. We arrived at 9PM right before the reception closed - I assume they would have been available even afterwards, but isn't this a little early? We really appreciated that they let us stay down playing scrubble until very late in the night and park our car in their private space for a few more hours after the check-out.

I stayed for three nights with seventeen fellow golfers as a base camp for rounds of golf in the area. The hotel is fairly average and a little tatty in places but it was clean and comfortable and the staff were all helpful and friendly (with one exception when we tried to reserve an area of the bar to eat). The breakfast choice was good and all local produce. We ate in the bar on two nights and the food as very good and good value for money. The bar served four different local beers but they were all fairly similar. The hotel is well placed in the centre of the town. Overall a pleasant enough stay.

We stayed at the Lion Hotel for 3 nights with 2 other couples. As we have a dachshund dog, we were put into their Annexe. Great view of Cricceith castle from the room, the only downside was we had no hot showers for 2 days. When we phoned the reception at 7.10am on the Sunday morning after finding out we had no hot water, we got a sleepy person telling my husband to get dressed and go and find the housekeeper! Interesting! An hour later, on the way to breakfast, we found the housekeeper who went to try and sort it out. That evening when we returned to the hotel, we went to reception and were told that the problem could not be fixed as the plumber who was called out did not have a spare part with him. They gave us a key for another room in the hotel (we could not move to it because of the dog), so we could use the shower in the morning. Next morning I felt like I was on a camping holiday going from the Annexe to the main hotel to use their facilities in my dressing gown to have a shower. On the day of departure, we settled our bill, the hotel deducted a small token of £20 off our bill, but it was very inconvenient not having a shower in your own room.

The other 2 couples had problems with late night drinkers sitting outside the hotel main entrance until midnight-1am and a TV that did not work, which even though reported, nobody came to look at it.

The photo of Lion Hotel is a bit misleading as it shows roads which I thought were within their grounds, but are actually side roads. I thought the tarmac areas were car parking spaces within their property.

I stayed for three nights with my husband and two other couples. Our room was at the front on the second floor and was very nice. It was comfortable, clean and had a really great sea view. Each day the bins were emptied and the tea/milk was replenished, but on the second evening when we returned from our touring, we found the quilt almost thrown onto the bed with a good foot of empty quilt cover at the top end. I had to remove it and replace it properly before we could retire. The following day I made the bed before we left so I knew it would be ok on our return! . The breakfast was all buffet which we rather liked and was varied and plentiful. We also ate at the hotel every evening and found the meals to be tasty and reasonably priced. However one of the party had duck one evening which she found to be very dry, so that may not be the best choice. All the staff we met were pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed our stay. However not all our party were happy and there were problems with the hot water in the annexe. Although we slept quite well, there was quite a lot of noise from other guests who were drinking in the garden until after midnight, and in general the hotel did not really quieten down until about 1am.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the main hotel. Those facing the front have the best views, but the sun does shine...
