I really do hope that our dining experience at The Moelwyn was just a one-off. Having been recommended this restaurant by the hotel we stayed in and also by reading the reviews on other internet sites we decided to go there as part of a birthday ‘break’. We arrived a little early having originally booked (2 weeks in advance) for 8.30pm but as the weather was so appalling we hoped we'd be able to eat 15 minutes early. We were greeted with the news that this wouldn’t be possible but we were happy enough to have a drink and peruse the menu and wine list whilst we waited. A few other couples came into the bar area, ordered food and like us proceeded to wait to be shown to their table (this included a couple that had walked in on spec.). We were finally shown through at 8.50pm – a lovely table next to the window overlooking the sea. The water we had asked for as well as our wine was on the table (although we had to ask for glasses for the water and we weren’t asked if we wanted to taste the wine).
The waitress offered us bread (the smallest bread roll you’ve ever seen!) and we had to ask for the butter. Our starters arrived, scallops which were lovely although the bed of pasta on which it was served was undercooked and cold (there's a difference between al dente and not cooked!) but by this time we were so hungry we couldn’t be bothered sending it back. The other starter was minestrone soup which was lovely – although more bread had to be asked for. Once we had finished our first course and waited an age for the dishes to be cleared we became aware that the 3 couples in the restaurant had also finished their first courses too but had also not had their plates cleared. It’s at this point that we realised that everyone was going to be served at the same time because this was obviously more convenient no matter what time tables were booked for, birthday celebrations etc. (small point - the candle on the table was obviously not good quality either as ours and others went out half way through the meal!) All the signs were starting to add up!
The main courses arrived – one bass / one cod – but the fish looked as if it had been blow torched for the roasted effect and one of the plates had a big chip on the side. The vegetables were again obviously microwaved – sacrilege that the new potatoes weren’t really fresh (or at least they didn’t taste like it). The redundant cutlery and side plates from the first course remained with us.
The backdrop to the evening was a cd that was repeated over and over; noise of cutlery being thrown into its respective trays and the dulcet tones of the microwave ‘pinging’ with too much regularity. It was clear that the waitress had very little experience of silver service although there was plenty of practice for setting tables for breakfast as this went on all around us throughout the evening.
On visiting the toilets we were greeted by naff plastic flowers and at least 2 resident spiders in the cubicle! On the way back to the table the reception area resembled more of a youth club than a hotel with waitress/barmaids/chefs all laughing and joking about.
Needless to say we didn’t stay for pudding. Our advice – Criccieth is lovely and we will return to try the other restaurants but definitely not the Moelwyn.
