We had an early evening meal here and enjoyed the historic and interesting building, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, good service and tasty home cooked food. A good choice for families and couples with something to suit all tastes.

It started well with some breadsticks, dip and olives served with our drinks. Unfortunately it went downhill from there as we decided to miss out on starters to go for puddings. This meant we waited nearly an hour for the mains to be served, two of which were stews and one chicken with sauce (served with FOUR chunky chips as a portion). Portions were Ok otherwise but not over generous for the prices. The table next door waited even longer having also waited 30 minutes for their starters.

In the end we had to ask for the pudding to come quickly so we could get back to our dogs. This did happen and was deemed tasty.

All in all a game of two halves but could have been so much better.

We tried Tiger prawns garlic, which were very pleasant and the Moroccan pasties which were unfortunately under seasoned but with good pastry and a nice hint of cinnamon; the Pearl wen brie was very good with a delicate flavour.
This was followed by roast lamb, which was perfect..crisp roast, excellent mash, and green beans red cabbage carrots all of which beautifully cooked. The duck breast was unfortunately overcooked and so a tad dry, but both the sauce and accompanying mash was very good. We also tried the belly pork which was really very nice.
Desert wise I had the cheeseboard which had miniscule portions, the Smoked Caerphilly was quite wonderful but a forkful at best, very disappointing. Choc brownie was crunchy on the outside...but too dry and the Choc hazelnut bake was unfortunately too reminiscent of the Morrocan pasty he had earlier, but the filling was delicious.
Our desert was served but sans cutlery, the background music played throughout was very definitely welsh and I think quiet an acquired taste.

You really need to book a table to be sure to get in.
We had not booked but the staff were great and luckily found us a table.
Service was very friendly, staff were constantly on the go serving and checking.
Food was excellent and at very reasonable prices

We last visited this restaurant in 2010- it has improved beyond recognition. It is now a lively bustling bistro with delightful staff. We have eaten two nights in a row and intend to eat again tomorrow.

The spring lamb casserole is delicious - filling, tasty. The cheeseboard had a great selection of welsh cheeses. Steak is pricey .

Children's menu is good value and has a decent choice.
