While traveling through Dolgellau, Wales on September 27, 2013, we relied on the local tourist information agent to book us into a bed and breakfast farmhouse. We certainly got lucky by the booking at Tyddyn Mawr Farmhouse.

The location was at Cader Idris, a beautiful mountain area with rolling hills and crystal clear lakes. Our floor room had a spacious double bed and our patio overlooked the hills and gardens. Leaving our French double doors open, we felt like the outdoors was within arms reach.

Olwen Evans, was the most friendly and helpful hostess that we had during our whole 3 weeks of travel through England and Wales. She greeted us with a tour of our facilities and gave us suggestions as to where to eat dinner. She also told us about some lovely hikes in the area and sites nearby that were used for film locations. Her information was useful and helpful as we really hadn't planned on staying in this area, so we had little idea about what to do during our stay. The tub was large enough to fit two and an added romantic treat.

The breakfast Olwen Evans served was tasty, plentiful and homemade. She made the preserves/jam and muesli. We were served with enough food to feed us for the entire day. Her meal was better than the castle hotels we stayed in during our trip to Wales. She had a way of making us feel so welcome that we really wished that we could have stayed longer to enjoy the area and her hospitality. This location is truly beautiful and should be included on any visit to this area of Wales.

About this time of year North Wales draws us in and for this particular free weekend in September Dolgellau beckoned. Some brief research revealed to us the gem that is Tyddyn Mawr B&B. The location seemed ideal and the reviews were great. Tyddyn Mawr didn’t disappoint. The location was stunning – on the doorstep of Cadair Idris – and the room (we were in the ground floor room ‘Cadair’) was spacious and well-appointed. We could step through the French doors onto our own patio area with a view directly onto the mountain. Our host Olwen was most welcoming and looked after us very well throughout our stay. We’d brought bikes and walking gear and there were plenty of suggestions as to where to go, what to do and where to eat. In truth we only scratched the surface so are already planning a return. Breakfast was a highlight of our day with homemade preserves and muesli featuring prominently – getting through all of the courses was a pleasant challenge but set us up for our days on the hills. Dolgellau is only two and a half miles away and there was a good choice of places to eat – Olwen was eager to advise on this front and her recommendations were spot on. In summary, a very pleasurable stay and easy to see why only 5 star ratings for Tyddyn Mawr.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the groundfloor room with its access to the patio and garden area. The upstairs room equa...

Tyddyn Mawr farmhouse is a wonderful place to stay. Olwen made me feel welcome and was very helpful throughout my stay with suggestions for places to visit. Each morning I had a lovely breakfast with homemade preserves, local honey and a marvellous home made muesli. Olwen offered a varied menu each day.

The room I stayed in was upstairs with a small balcony. Comfortable bed, chairs, teas and coffee making facilities, dressing table, TV, radio and large ensuite with both bath and shower.

The farm overlooks Cader Idris, whilst I couldn't see much of it when I first arrived, when the sun was out and the cloud had lifted it was beautiful. The location was really quiet and restful, exactly what I needed.

A real find. A very warm welcome and we were very well looked after. We had the blue room upstairs, which was decorated, furnished and maintained to a very high standard.

The location on a farm by the Cader Idris mountain is stunning and if you like the coast as well as the rugged, mountainous countryside the lovely Barmouth is a short drive away.

We thank our host, Mrs Evans and highly recommend the Tyddyn Mawr Farmhouse

We reviewed this B and B a few years ago and we have had several visits since. Another excellent holiday, the weather was a bit of everything so it was good to have such good walking available right from the door of the B and B. In good weather glorious walking on Cader awaits whilst in poor weather you can dodge the showers by going on really excellent low level and sheltered walks of various lengths.

Our accommodation and food was still excellent, we love both the location and the rooms, a very comfortable stay. Olwyn is an excellent host and is ready to help with her unrivalled local knowledge. Plenty of good eating places within an easy drive and one, Gwernan Lake Hotel a short walk away.

If you like walking you are bound to be delighted with your stay here.

We can't praise Tyddyn Mawr enough. A superb location with fantastic views from the two rooms. Excellent accommodation - comfortable, spacious and high quality. Breakfast is an occasion to look forward to - the food was fantastic. But most of all Olwen is the kindest most welcoming and generous person you could hope to meet. Definitely the best bed and breakfast we have stayed in anywhere in the world - and there have been quite a few!

Room Tip: Both rooms are excellent.
