“Five-star”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2012

On being shown into the room my partner immediately described it as 'five-star'. The reply? 'Yes that's what we aimed for.' Being a cynic I was thinking 'hang on, this is a modest little unknown place in north Wales.' But on reflection I had to concede that it betters several five-stars I know. Big attractive freshly-decorated room, bathrobe, slippers, huge bed, nice toiletries.... Located right next to several bars and restaurants but its own restaurant seemed to be the choice of locals, and that on a Monday night. Food and service to recommend. Nothing wrong with breakfast but maybe a bit three-star. Otherwise OK they can compete at top level!

The hotel provides quality rooms that are modern, comfortable and relaxing. It also handily has a restaurant that serves great food at a reasonable price for three courses. The owners were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend a stay here and will be returning next time I venture to Mid Wales.

Our stay at Y Meirionnydd was a rare (for us) example of choosing to stay at a specific hotel and then hoping the destination's alright - rather than the other way round, which is what we usually do.

We needed a break and I fancied the idea of going back to Wales which, apart from Cardiff, I hadn't been to for over ten years. Assisted by an updated guidebook, I pored through countless websites for hotels in towns up and down the principality, but Y Meirionnydd stood out: if the hotel itself reflected the aesthetic of its website, then I was pretty confident I'd like it.

And so it proved. The Mawddach room was spacious and tastefully decorated in bang-up-to-date style, with free wi-fi that worked flawlessly, a TV that had all the channels, windows you can open, heat you can control, and a superlatively comfortable bed. Dinner in the cosy restaurant and breakfast on the ground floor were both good, everything pitched just right, made all the better by excellent service (which, to Wales's credit, we encountered throughout our trip, wherever we went).

Niggles? Well, there are a few - very minor, but in the interests of being honest... The temperature of the water in the shower did have a habit of varying wildly on its own, occasionally causing me to yelp out in shock as I was briefly scalded. And on the second evening, the room smelt curiously of cooking - even though the kitchen was two floors below us. Don't let these things put you off, though - this is a fine establishment.

What of Dolgellau itself? It's a very small market town which, although commercially somewhat in the doldrums during our mid-recession visit, easily has the potential to reinvent itself as a resort town should it want to. It's a handsome place, unusual in lacking a clearly defined high street, instead containing a mix of sort-of squares and sort-of lanes tumbling in charming fashion down the hillside towards the river; overall, a wonderful setting. I preferred it to Bala, Barmouth and Machynlleth, even though those towns are a bit livelier.

So, this is the town in which to base yourself in spectacular southern Snowdonia, and Y Meirionnydd is the place to stay: a wonderful hotel in which to eat, drink and sleep.

We recently went on a road trip around England and Wales. We found this lovely inn right in the centre of Dolgellau. Friendly welcome. Great room - very clean, very spacious, very comfortable. The real surprise came with the restuarant downstairs. My wife and I had a great 3 course meal, and a very nice french red, at very reasonable prices. If you are planning a trip through this area, I recommend that you stay here, but even if you don't, try the attached restuarant downstairs. You wont be disappointed. I hope to be back one day!

Hello and thank you for reviewing us all the way from beautiful Australia! It's great that you both enjoyed your stay with us and particularly your comments about the food in our restaurant - our great chef will be very pleased indeed.
Since you were with us we have opened the newly refurbished cellar restaurant so if you are over here again please call back and see the changes.
Kind regards from all of us at Y Meirionnydd

In the centre of Dolgellau I was delighted to discover Y Merionydd. The welcome could not have been warmer, the room was well appointed with lovely extras- slippers/ dressing gown and good quality toiletries. The cellar restaurant was a treat - intimate and cosy with an interesting menu that featured local producers - my Welsh lamb was delicious and was
topped off with an excellent selection of Welsh Cheeses. You will not be disappointed.
