“Beautiful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

Just returned from another visit to Shell Island, and cannot fault it.
Beautiful location, I feel the South Beach with it's dunes is more than a match for Floridian beaches on a nice day.
Fantastic site, which is also a SSI site, so many hidden natural gems. Campfires allowed on the beach and on the site, provided reasonable and sensible conditions are met, this really is a nice touch.
I've camped in fully serviced, premium camp sites in the past, and this is as far removed as you can get!
Toilet and shower facilities are functional rather than opulent, there is a well equipped little camping shop and supermarket, considering the rather captive nature of these businesses, prices are sensible.
Great little restaurant on site too, with tasty breakfast which I thought were excellent value for money.
I would recommend Shell Island to anyone, it's basic compared to a lot of camp sites, but has stunning natural beauty. Can't wait to go again

Went here for a day trip as we were staying close by. crabbing and paddling were fun! Toilets were a disgrace. Went in the toilets at around 10.30am and they were disgusting. Smelt of urine and were dirty. Staff were friendly and it is worth a visit. Could do with sorting the toilets out and then it would be a good family day out!

My wife and I went to the Shell Island for a day visit. The camping site is huge, there is a long stretch of beach , plenty of shells on the beach, lovely views across the sea, but it did not look like there was a lot of effort to keep the place clean and well maintained.
I can not comment on other facilities as we only stayed a few hours.
I don't know if its technically an island as we did not cross any bridge or take a ferry to get there.
There is a road in the middle of the estuary, which is liable to submersion during high tides, leading up to the Shell Island.
The place is certainly great for a camping holiday by the beach.

As most say on here, the location is stunning,as is the site in general.great pitches that you choose yourself, get there early and drive around a little, pick best location to suit.Several toilets around, the portacabin type, and these are fine, and were mostly clean to be fair. The big let down of the site, and 1 which deters some people from returning,is the lack of showering facilities. For the size of the site, which claims to be 1 of the biggest in europe,is it really acceptable to have 1 shower block with around 6 showers in the male section. Why are the owners not spending a tiny amount from the profit they make to add another couple of shower blocks.i also agree with comments regarding staff members,a smile is better than a grunt, and manners cost nothing.

The wife and I and our little dog visited Shell Island in our motorhome for two nights (a Tuesday and Wednesday in July).

A week prior I hadn’t even heard of Shell Island so this review is aimed at others like me.
Shell Island is on the west coast of Wales about 7 miles north of Barmouth. There is a road leading to there that you drive on, but at certain high tides the sea covers the road.
No caravans are allowed, just tents and motorhomes (I have no idea why). The cost is per person, not per unit. We were charged £7.40 each and £2 for the dog.

There is no EHU there. My Three phone worked at certain parts of the Island, My O2 dongle was much the same; on and off. There is WIFI at the main building at £1.50 per day.
As mentioned in other reviews, you camp where you like. If I went again I would spend more time looking for the perfect pitch. We chose to pitch with a fantastic view overlooking the beach but the strong wind was an issue.

Showers and toilets are best described as adequate, there is no underfloor heating and piped music here.

There is a bar and shop on site. I recollect a fruit cider in the bar costing £3.30 which seemed reasonable. There is also a laundrette at £3 a wash and £1 for the dryer.

One day we decided to walk to the nearby village. The main road seemed a long way round so we thought we would take the shortcut as the tide was out over the beach/ Harbour/ estuary or whatever it is (we are from a city so not good with these sort of things). We were making good progress when the sand turned to mud and we began to sink. This was a brown trouser moment for us both and we were not sure what to do. Our small dog was covered in mud and Mrs B was up to her shins. We didn’t know whether to retrace our steps or head for what looked like nearer solid ground, we chose the latter and made it. This was more luck than management. Please learn from our mistakes and stick to the main road or designated beaches.

Overall Shell Island was a great place to visit. We loved the fact that you could park anywhere and have amazing views and plenty of room. Could do with a better cleaning and I did resent paying £2 for the mutt, however it’s still a 5

Room Tip: Have a good look around to find the perfect spot before pitching.

I have been going shell island once a month, for the past three months with my partner and my family. Every single family member enjoys camping at shell island so much because it offers peace and total relaxation for everyone. You can set up camp where ever you want, in the dog fields (for those who own such wonderful pets) or in the sand dunes, you can have fires at night in your fire pit, walk for miles and miles in the sand dunes and then onto the 6 mile beach, the dogs love it! Not only is this a fantastic place for the family, it's great for kids too as it's not a commercial campsite, the kids can run around and be happy to their hearts content as you have your own area to camp in. The shop and camp shop are brilliant, especially if you forgotten something!! The staff are helpful and friendly! The toilet block and showers are handy too, they have always been clean each time I have used them. The money you pay to enjoy such fantastic views, quality family time together with my lovely family and getting away from the rush and hectic ness of everyday life is priceless for me. Can't wait to return in august!!!

Room Tip: Camp in the sand dunes, it's amazing, and only a 5 min walk from the beach

We stayed at Shell Island campsite for 4 nights with our little dog. The receptionist gave us a warm welcome and explained the layout of the pitches, handed us a map and brochure. We were then let in through the security barrier by a cheerful chap. We pitched our tent and found that nobody adheres to the dogs to be kept on a lead rule. The site is a SSSI site and is beautiful. The beach is gorgeous and we had a great time on the sand and rockpools. But beware of the edges of the campsite in places, especially if you have young children. There are no fences and the drop to the beach in places is a long way down. Unfortunately the things that let this site down were the general cleanliness of the showers and toilets. Everything was grubby and a bit dated. The supermarket is expensive and the staff are not overly helpful or friendly. The gift shop is a nice little shop and the camping store has anything you may have forgotten. The staff in the bar seemed more interested in reading a book than serving people. Again its was grubby. The skips where you leave your rubbish were overflowing and the staff didn't seem to make much of an effort to clear this. I do appreciate that the gulls get in these skips and make a mess. Maybe some lids would make a difference.
