“Poor, overpriced food and dreadful service”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

We booked a table for dinner while we were staying nearby in August this year. We had passed the pub earlier in the week and seeing that they had a very large vegetable patch, thought the food would be really good. How wrong we were! We specifically booked to eat in the dining room, thinking (wrongly) that this would mean a more extensive menu and also table service. The menu was exactly the same and you still had to go and order at the (very busy) bar. I completely accept that we had chosen the busiest time to eat, but why tell us there was a half hour wait for food when it was in fact three quarters of an hour? It eventually arrived at the table with a muttered "sorry" and it was just about OK. We couldn't face repeating the process for dessert, so we didn't bother. It was such a shame really as the pub had a beautiful garden and covered seating area, ideal for families and being so close to the coast, I imagine lots of people get caught the same way we did. If the pub owners/manager reads this, I recommend you make sure someone is clearly in charge, managing the bar and restaurant and also take about £2 of each dish on the menu - you'll be amazed at how the reviews improve.

I have to agree with many other reviewers about the quality of the food. I had the 'beer-battered' cod with chips and mushy peas for £9.95, and though the chips and peas were fine, the fish was chewy and flavourless - presumably fresh from the freezer. We ate outside in the garden on one of the tables beneath the canopy, and were very taken with the setting. But there were supposed to be numbers on every table to aid the waitress in delivering food and ours didn't have one - just a circle where it used to be. But could we convince the guy behind the bar of this? Not easily. Hard to believe in this day and age that management can be so careless about the way they run what should be a very attractive eaterie.

The hotel accommodation is clean and comfortable. The pub/ restaurant is excellent, great food and service, but what makes it so good is the child and adult friendly garden which has the river Arto running beside it(safely behind a wall) There is a heated and lit gazebo which makes it weatherproof at all times.

Room Tip: We are regulars here to eat and drink, but haven't stayed recently and have no reason to think an...

This is not a gourmet spa inn, but a village inn/pub. It's a well-run place with everything you'll need, great beer, good food, beer garden, quaintly situated in a tiny village. If you're looking for action, this is not the spot. But if you're in the mood a some relaxing, unassuming place to spend the night, this is great value.

We used the Victoria Inn several times for meals whilst camping nearby, (myself, my brother and my two grandsons aged 6 and 7).
The full breakfast was pleasant enough but not what I would describe as a `full English`, small portions and in my opinion overpriced at £6.95. On our second visit for breakfast staff forgot our beans which seemed strange as there is only one full breakfast on the menu which includes beans. When we mentioned this it took ages for the beans to arrive and we had almost finished our meal. To be fair when I complained we were given a part refund.
Evening meals again were enjoyed by all of us but on one occasion they had run out of red sauce and vinegar, staff were not apologetic and just told me to check other tables. (how can a restaurant run out of the basics like sauce and vinegar ?)
The problem with this establishment is that the staff seem to lack any customer service skills, they walk round as if in a trance, very rarely smile or engage in conversation, it is as if they are doing you a favour by serving you.
We were always able to get a table and there is a safe play area for the kids.
The establishment is clean as are the toilets.
There is good parking nearby.

We had a two night weekend break at the Victoria and took our dog, the room was lovely (room 4 I think) overlooking the side road, quiet, huge comfy bed. The garden was very busy but we found a good table and food was served quickly once we ordered it, good value pub food and good selection of beers and wines. Service was very friendly by everyone we met from the lady who checked us in (when we arrived early at 11.30) to the young man behind the bar who served us our first drinks and enquired how we liked our room, and the staff at breakfast. We had a lovely stay and will visit again.

Room Tip: there are only a few rooms but perhaps those overlooking the garden might be noisy in summer, otherw...

we are local and been to many different places and this meal was by FAR the worst! We are easily pleased but even this was very poor ! We called ahead and was advised no need to book, we arrive and go to the bar, not advised to go to the restaurant but when ordering we were advised we will pay more for the same thing in the bar than the restaurant which is literally 30 feet away from the bar. AFTER WE HAD PAID... So I check the restaurant.. 3 couples in the room, I was told we must book so I said I'll go outside and call them to be told they were full !!! The meal arrived shortly followed by the cutlery, then the veg... it was served on a TEA PLATE... Soggy and squashed like they'd been stacked on each other. Offered no sauces, meat was cold unless it had hot gravy on it. Meal was 2 slices of meat, few new potatoes, oven frozen type roasties. Frozen style sliced carrots, tinned peas and orange sludge swede... anyway you get the picture... oh and a few table spoons of gravy. £9.75 (I think) and the pop for the kids was out of a normal pop bottle... waste of £50... This seem harsh but I assure you we don't normally write such a review but it really was terrible and we only live 10 miles from there.
