“On Offas Dyke trail”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

If you are looking for a nights rest while walking the trail you can do far worse than the Kings Head. It is on the route, and in the heart of Monmouth, it is clean and well equipped offering a range of evening and breakfast options at good value. My only criticism is that the single room I had was not great for anyone over 6 feet tall. Book through the franchise site and you will probably get a better room rate.

Room Tip: Book through the franchise website for best value

We were in Monmouth for a wedding nearby and had booked the Kings Head because it is central and convenient. We have used JD Weatherspoon pubs many times but never stayed. It was a very pleasent surprise at the quality of the room, large and airy overlooking the front (102). The table fan looked ominous, but we did not need it. The windows did need to be shut at night because the street below gets quite lively at the weekend, we stayed Fri to Mon. Noise was not a particular problem, except at 05:00 each morning the street below was washed and swept, I didn't realise that Monmouth was so cleen! The bathroom was sptolessly clean and functional, towels were good quality too. The over bath shower is not termostatically controlled and can be tempremental. A good quality TV is in the room, along with tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. The bed was particularly comfortable, with extra pillows. Craig on Reception checked us out and was friednly and efficient. We even managed to pick up free Wiif without having to go into the pub!

Room Tip: Light sleepers might prefer a room on the back.

I arrived on the bus from Newport for a two nights stay at about 1.00pm on the 13th August.
A wonderful welcome awaited me, and I was able to check-in early.
This fine building is right in the middle of historic Monmouth. A great hotel in an unbelievably nice town. For such a small town the shops and facilities are amazing .A bus service to,and from Newport leaves each hour. Trains to London Paddington leave Newport every thirty minutes, equally frequently to Bristol and the South and West. Hourly to the Midlands and North. I was amazed to be able to travel into the countryside towards Hereford, Chepstow and the Wye valley, Ross on Wye and the lovely Forest of Dean by bus without difficulty. The rivers at Monmouth are a delight, and nearby castles and historic sights are amazing. A wonderful town museum including the famous Nelson Collection was 'entry free'.
The food at the Weatherspoons Kings Head was excellent in both quality and value, as was the
the room. Super visit and thanks to staff..

Room Tip: Request room at rear, to avoid noise of main square at night. Town is busy. No view but no noise.

we were told on arrival that we had a quiet room which was very true. Our daughter had a front room and was distrubed by people hanging around outside until the early hours. Breakfast is an optional extra and is served in the bar. The cost of our room was £34 which was amazing value.

Booked this hotel last minute for £39 - you can't really complain at that price can you!? Right in the heart of Monmouth, the gentleman on reception was really polite, informative and straight to the point (which is what we wanted after driving all day). The rooms were really hot at night, and this was mid august when it was cooler - but there is a fan provided which did help to cool it down. The bedroom was spotless but the shower was really mildewy - along the bottom of the casing and on the outside of the fittings. In our bathroom the towel rack was alongside the toilet, so you either had to be really careful with placing a towel on it, or not use it as the towel would otherwise be rubbing against the toilet - which isn't a pleasant idea! Other than that, you can't fault it! There is no hotel parking, but there is a local council carpark which is a short drive away (2 mins by foot) which is free in the evenings.

Room Tip: We had 208, was quite small (but adequate for a night), and looked over the back at some abandoned h...
