“GREAT”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

Fantastic Hotel just outside the main village (about a ten minute walk or minibus ride). Really lovely rooms plenty of space, great service, nice food. It's good to be out of the village but some may prefer to be in it.

Ate in the Castell restaurant last evening. The food is without doubt lovely exceptionally well prepared and presented but the service lets it down. Our wine did not arrive until after the starters and the table staff little difficult to attract. Overall happy with the meal but wouldn't rush back. They benfit from captive market in Portmerion guest and maybe a little complacent.

I previously stayed in the main hotel and decided to try the Castell for a change for my business trip. Was not disappointed! The room (Castell 5) was huge!! I decided to order room service and the food was just delicious! Service perfect as usual and I just want wait to stay there again very soon. If you haven't been here just go, perfect for a romantic night away, there really isn't anything close by so just enjoy the village, the beautiful scenery, gorgeous food and have a great time!!

The hotel was superb with friendly staff. The room was a three room suite and exceptionally clean and comfortable. We stayed on a Dinner Bed and Breakfast deal which was good value. The food was of a very high standard and the atmosphere was pleasant looking out onto the lawn and gardens. The price includes entry and a regular shuttle into Portmeirion. You have the choice to dine in the other hotel down in the village which has a lovely outlook over the estuary but we found that the atmosphere was very quiet and we did not like the menu as much as the castle., it was more complicated. The staff throughout were fantastic and nothing was to much for them. We would definitely return for a future break in North Wales as this is well suited for touring the Snowdonia region.

Room Tip: Book early and ask for a garden view. Our room had no view but we did book late and were informed on...

This is a most unusual hotel. Very large mock castle that only has 11 bedrooms, all different.
We had a large delightful room, room 10 with views to the garden and estuary. Very comfortable and friendly professional service. The restaurant is very good, not cheap but good value as the meals are well cooked and presented. The restaurant stall are very well trained. will return some day we hope

There are things about staying here that really are great. We stayed In the Penthouse Suite, the room was large, toiletries good, fluffy towels, quality robes, generally high quality products. But the room does really need a refurbishment. The furniture is very high quality but has been supplemented by additional pieces from Ikea!
And that really sums up this hotel, it set a high standard and failed to maintain it.
The underfloor heating was unbearable and when we asked reception to turn it off (it was 20 degrees outside) the lady looked up and just said "I don't think we can". She didn't even try.
The staff really need a lot of training in customer service standards. It doesn't matter that it's a castle in a really great location. Poor staff equals bad experience.
On the first night we booked in for dinner and turned up at the correct time. They couldn't find our booking, the restaurant manager was called. He stepped between us and the waiter, turned his back, he then talked about us in a rather unprofessional way and just walked off. The waiter followed and we were left standing there. A few minutes later someone else came back and took us to one of the small overcrowded tables.
The bread waiter gave a very good impression of 'Kevin the Teenager'.
Some points- you have enough space for good service, train your staff to not reach across in front of diners when they are in conversation, walk around the table. We don't want to smell the waiters deodorant, but at least he was wearing some.
The tables are small so don't overcrowd then, the staff frequently struggled to fit things on the tables.

This place could be good, invest in maintenance and training.
We won't be returning, there are too many better places around.
