Good experience had by us in the gaol. We found the information detailed and well presented. The staff were extremely friendly and offered to look after our pram whilst we took our 7month old around. Our daughter babbled away and didn't seem bothered by the fact that she was in a gloomy prison. We both agreed that the gaol would suit school trips with a guide. Worth the £4.50 entry fee. Took us about 30 mins to get round but we got fed up with the audio handheld guides after the first room so probably would have taken a bit longer if we'd have used them.

Very interesting and gave a real feel how horrible life was for the wrong doers. Good value for money.

“A comprehensive historical look at life in a local gaol”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

There is a lot to see and it is all interesting. Someone told us that it would take 40 minutes. This was optimistic and we had to dash round the last of the site as we were on a timed parking ticket after 90 minutes.

“Very educational”

This was another good family afternoon. The children loved seeing how the prisoners lived and my husband and I enjoyed reading all the history of the place. Worth a visit.

“Unexpected attraction”
Reviewed 10 September 2013 via mobile

The Gaol is located in the back streets of the town and therefore after trying to find it our expectations were not high. However we were pleasantly surprised! There is a lot to walk round and the Audio tour is interesting. The condition of the building is good considering the age. I'd say its worth a visit if you are in the area.
