The unfinished castle is in good condition and includes some interesting information/photos of Edward I's other castles in Wales. Enough to keep you occupied for an hour or so. Advise on going early. It opens at 9.30am and we arrived as soon as it opened and were the only ones there. The steps to the towers are not for the faint hearted.

“Castle family visit”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

The day we went there was added attractions of re enactment of knights etc. so was good but this would be quite disappointing and expensive if there were no added attractions, although the staff were excellent..... And there's no toilet inside castle grounds

“Mediaeval weekend”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

went on August Bank Holiday and didn't know about the wekend event so was a good bonus , we are English Heritage members so it was free to enter but the cost isn't horrendous anyway.

all the events were good and the Kids enjoyed. only downside was the manky pork sausage in a bun that was passed off as food. I think it might have been the pigs knackers that it was made from. it tasted foul and I nearly barfed.

“Well preserved castle, could use more info!”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

Visited Beaumaris as an afternoon activity whilst staying in Caernarfon recently. The castle is well preserved and offers great views of the local area. There is ease of access to the walls and the keep alike so anyone can explore the castle as if they were there when it was built. However, one downside we noticed when we went was the lack of information, we did not buy the guide book but it would still have been nice to have information boards at more regular intervals around the castle as those not well versed in castle building may have struggled to identify sections of the castle. The information room on the welsh princes and kings was interesting but was by far the most crowded in the castle so could do with some expansion to accommodate the interest it gathered. Overall I would recommend a trip to Beaumaris no matter your age but I would recommend a guide book and a research of the castle first!

“Cross your legs and hang on”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

Castles are great, and as castles go, this one has a lot to offer. Classic moat arrangement and inner and outer walls. Everything you read about in your 'Idiot's guide to Castles'. There are some great long passage ways within the walls which are great to explore, and some of the towers are accessible. The views from the castle are fantastic and you can see why a castle was sited here, commanding the Menai Straits.

This is great place to take the kids, and a good park just outside the walls means that there is more for them to do in the vicinity. However if you take kids anywhere, in between the manic running through the passageways and up and down spiral stairs, there are two inevitibale demands. Firstly 'I'm hungry', secondly 'I need the toilet'. Well good luck with that in Beaumaris Castle.

Remember those passage ways, well there are a few dead ends along here that have a faint whiff of urine. Obivously some people are finding their own way of protesting about the lack of toilets on the site. We took our 5YO daughter out of the castle and found the closest, less than perfect, public toilet for which we had to pay. Not having change we even needed to borrow money from the Castle shop.

It would have been good then to relax in the Castle Teashop with a light lunch and perhaps a slice of homemade cake. Well there isn't one. I guess the crux of my complaint about the castle is that it is poorly managed without any investment. This is a busy place with people willing to spend moeny. By running a cafe inside the castle they could raise valuable resources to help with some of the fabric maintenance. A cafe and good toilets would just make the experince more comfortable for people with families.

The fabric maintenance is obviously an issue. While the whole point of the place is to see an 11th century castle that has survived hundreds of years, there is normally an acceptabnce that the current state is maintained and made safe. You see this with spiral stairs that have been replaced with concrete. The new is disitinct from the old. However some of the walks along the walls and tower access is now closed off for 'safety reasons'. From memory my last visit 30 years ago enjoyed far greater access. So work is required to make these areas safe for access again. Hence a need for revenue from as many sources as possible. A decent visitor centre would not go amiss either.

It is a shame as this is such a wonderful castle that is part of a fascinating story of Anglo-Welsh conflict. It really could offer a lot more. It would be run very differently (and better) if the National Trust were doing it.

But would I go back - without a doubt, even if there were no improvements.
