“Much ado about nothing”

Second rate food and service for at 1st rate prices. Maitre D very unpleasant. Would rather have sat in the bar enjoying a pint watching the Welsh rugby game.

“Don't belive the menu”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Starter of carpaccio beef - thick slices of medium rare beef - not carpaccio. Surf & Turf Tempura Prawns were 90% batter - definitely not tempura. Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham came deep fried wrapped in a ham that was not Palma ham

Extremely noisy with the so called dining room being just an extension off the bar.

Service very offhand. Poor selection of white wines and not all available.

Don't go.

“Average - wouldnt rush back”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Booked a table for 6 via the Internet link on their website for this evening - Easter Monday. On arrival no booking shown in book but luckily they had a table we could all sit straight down to. First waitress who took our drink order and food order very friendly and courteous. Second waitress attitude a lot to be desired - one of our party has a wicked sense of humour and asked her if she was ok to which she responded she had been out the night before and had a terrible hangover and felt sick!!! But after this we did manage to get her to crack a slight smile!! Starters we felt over priced for what we got. Mains average/acceptable with the exclusion of the vegetarian dish which was advertised to come with parmesan crisps - I say the word crisps lightly as IT yes 1 came on a separate plate - when we asked for more we got yet ANOTHER 1 on a plate - which did give us all a good laugh. 3 of us had steak meals and I would say there are much better value restaurants in Menai for the same price. Although not a bad meal considered it definitely average and rather disappointing, attitude of the hungover waitress did not help - needless to say we are normally very generous with our tips but felt on this occasion due to the bad service of waitress number 2 one was not warranted. Think it will be a while before we revisit, we are in Anglesey most weekends as we own a holiday home 10 mins away from here are there are definitely better places to go.

“Overambitious and overpriced”
Reviewed 20 April 2014 via mobile

Having been subjected to poor service at the anglesey arms in the past i was reluctant to return. However, being Easter weekend it was one of a few places in town where we could find a table despite booking ten days in advance - a great testament to the popularity of Menai Bridge at present.

The bar area and restaurant were fairly busy when we arrived, after ordering our drinks at the bar we were quickly seated in the restaurant area but had to approach another waitress for menus some minutes later. Although it is now the middle of spring we were offered the autumn menu; a good selection of specials were on offer - we mainly ordered from this menu. We were impressed with what the menu had to offer however what followed didn't live up to expectation - a serious case of an over ambitious menu.

It appeared that the waitress who took our order was unfamiliar with the menu as a few of us ordered the king prawns (which was served in a black bean sauce with wilted spinach) - a plate of prawn toast arrived at the table. The mistake was acknowledged and rectified by the waitress who apologised but unfortunately the other members of our party had finished their starters by the time the king prawns arrived.

The portions of king prawns varied around the table and were difficult to find as they were drowning in the black bean sauce. When we checked if the mussels dish which we had also ordered was accompanied by garlic bread the waitress was again unsure and went to check and came back with two triangles of cheap sliced white bread! The generous portion of soup was deemed tasty.

The sirloin beef was chewy - it needed a steak knife which wasn't offered with the meal - and half of it was inedible due to the amount of grissle. Despite bringing this to the waitress' attention - who just quickly glanced at the plate and offered no apology - the full price of this meal was included on the bill. The duck breast was well cooked and flavoursome and was served with cubes of sweet potato (described as mash on the menu) - shame the baby leeks weren't cooked! The chicken burger was a success however - served with a generous portion of chips, coleslaw and a huge onion ring.

For dessert we opted for the chocolate brownie and the cheesecake. Disappointingly the cheesecake base was still frozen and therefore difficult to cut into. The brownie was okay - this was our second choice having been informed that the chocolate fondant was unavailable.

During the evening we were served by more than one waitress, one of which was a tad over familiar - "Ta Doll" isn't an appropriate way of thanking a customer upon paying the bill in a restaurant in my opinion! Having settled the bill we were left agog when the waitress appeared at the table and asked "do you want the change?"!!

The chef doesn't seem to take any pride in the quality or presentation of the food which is a shame as it has the potential to be a great venue. Based on the food and service we received it is very overpriced.

With so much other choices in Menai Bridge we won't be returning to the anglesey arms.

Excellent food. Staff were friendly and service good. Wish I'd booked to stay there rather than the awful hotel I stayed in.
