Description: As the premier award winning Gastro Pub in South Wales, we pride ourselves on setting the bar in best in class cuisine, fine dining and customer service. Nestled in the heart of Wale’s beautiful Monmouthshire, and the stunning historical village of Magor, The Golden Lion is a standout Welsh fine dining experience. Opened in 2014 by restaurateurs Louise Jones and Garth Davis, The Golden Lion has won acclaim and awards across the UK for both it’s ala carte and Vegan menus. Using only the finest seasonal produce from local farms, markets and producers, many of the seasonal ingredients used by Head Chef Ariel Mlotek are what inspire our menu. Set in a stunning and historically listed building that is over 500 years old, the restaurant is sumptuously furnished, with a beautiful outdoor beer garden, events room and sports bar. In the front room beyond the dining area is the intimate front bar where we welcome families, pets and discerning beverage enthusiasts. Adored by diners and drink

A local village pub where you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome by all the staff. The Sunday lunches are worth every penny and taste delicious. We recently went back for more and sampled lunch......just as tasty as the previous experience. Andrea was very helpful with recommendations and even though not in the restaurant was constantly attentive with both bar and food orders. My partner had a ham and tomato sandwich but I have to recommend the lasagne which is fantastic! I'm from London and this is a pub that can rival any there. To top all this you get the warmest of welcomes from Louise the landlord.

Our reservation was for 2 p.m. for Sunday lunch so we arrived at about 12:30 for a couple of liverners. The dining area was empty and stayed that way. A couple without a free education were invited to comeback latter. The arrival of some very small pirates accompanied by similarly bedecked minders indicated that high seas activity was afoot in the newly refurbished first floor function room. But it seemed that the chef could not cope with doing a pork joint and few salads for the grown up pirates plus a few fish fingers for the crew as well as attend to the Sunday diners. Everything stopped. The manager did his best without saying that the chefs were precious. As a consequence our meal arrived at 14:30.
Be aware that Sunday lunch is a two or three course event without the option for only one and at £10.95 not the cheapest about particularly if one of your number has beef without the beef and gets charged full price!

Good food, good beer, friendly staff. I thought it was an excellent pub experience with a few menu items given considerably more care than just an average village pub.

We popped in on Saturday afternoon for a quick drink in the sunshine after a cycle ride, and we liked the look of the place so we decided to come back on Sunday evening for a meal. What an excellent idea that turned out to be!. Great food and lovely staff, we had no table booked and we were there before the food service, but made to feel welcome and had a drink while we waited. Can definately recommend it and will be back again.

Visited a few times since the new owners took over. Service has improved dramatically and the feel of the pub has definitely become more welcoming and inviting. Good range of food on the menu and quality is superior to any 'pub' I've been to. Highly recommended for both drinks and food.
