“Great Value”

We spent two nights at The Royal Black Lion the third week in August in room 208, which is at the top of the Hotel facing the main street. This Hotel is two stars and was excellent value at £100 for the two nights with breakfast. There is plenty of off street parking at the rear. However there is a gulley under the archway that caught the bottom of our car, there is an alternative route that takes you through the back streets to the main road. The breakfast was excellent and evening meals were very good value with plenty of choice and the staff were courteous and helpful. Now the bad bits, the room was very warm (which is a good thing in winter) and we especially liked the underfloor heating in the bathroom. The bathroom really needed replacing as it was tired and grubby. The carpet in the bedroom was tatty, stained and horrible to walk on with bare feet. The clock bell on the town hall opposite rang every quarter of the hour, and had an annoying delay when it struck the hour. It was turned off, thankfully, from eleven until six in the morning. There is also a raised area in the street below that every truck bounced and crashed over throughout the night. Now we understand that the Hotel can do nothing about the traffic or the clock bell it was more that we were not prepared and should have taken ear plugs and shut the window (the room was too hot). The only way to see through the window was to open it because it needed cleaning very badly. On a positive note, the bedding was clean and crisp and there was little noise from the other guests. The WiFi only worked downstairs in the bar/restaurant areas.

Booked to stay in the hotel for 2 nights 12th and 13th August at a cost of £50 a night, which we considered reasonable. On arrival we parked up in the car park at the rear of the building, we then proceeded to look for reception to check in, there was not one and there was no one at the bar, for someone, to talk to. The bar has 4 separate serving counters all in different sections, you would go dizzy walking around trying to find a memeber of staff.

A memeber of staff eventually turned up, from the kitchen area, she was very friendly and welcoming and soon had us checked in and showed us to our room by means of a warren of several corridors. It was about 7.30 in the evening when we arrived, when we were checking in we were asked would we be eating in the hotel, we said we would be as the menu looked rather extensive.

Once in our room, which was on the first floor and over looked the main street, we noticed that there were cracks in the walls and the carpet was rather dirty, the window frame looked a bit wonky. Having said all that the bedding and towels were pristine and the room was very spacious.Later on we were to discover that the bed was the creakiest bed in the world, so just get in and lie there.

We were advised on "check in" that breakfast was 7.30 to 9.00, which is a bit of an early start if youare on hols and want a lie in, the creaky bed soon puts pay to a lie in.

Having settled in we went down to dinner and we were shown to the table that had been reserved for us. We were advised that there was no more chilli which was disappointing as it meant a number of dishes were not available. Ordered our meals and some drinks, the same cheerful person that check us in, so there was a bit of chat etc. Our 2 drinks cost £6.40 and out meals came to £15.20 for both, recommend bangers and mash, rather a lot of mash though. When we were finished we went for a walk down the town, got back at about 10.15 and decided to have a quick drink at the bar, it was dead we were the only 2 people there and had to play find the elusive bar staff again.

The place had a lived in feel, it had like bed covers, throws, over all of the sofas and as you entered the bar and dining area it had its own unique smell. The breakfast was good as was the service.

Overall it was not bad but needs a bit ofan overhaul and updating.

We passed through Lampeter with our family, 2 adults 5 children. The staff were really friendly and we were provided with a great service. The menu had a great selection of choice not just for adults but for the children too. Once we ordered we were presented with our food quickly, no long wait time which was great with the kids. Not only did the food look amazing it tasted amazing too. Would certainly eat here more often. Overall this is a great family friendly pub with excellent service. We would like to wish the new manager Vanessa and the chef Dave many successful years to come.

My wife and I visited the lovely Welsh Town of Lampeter Friday and Saturday for a family wedding (held locally) on the Saturday. We were made welcome at The Black Lion and shown to a very nice twin room with spare bed for our grandchild. All very clean and comfortable. Slightly dodgy plumbing but manageable. New Manager Vanessa is lovely and most helpful at all times. Bar service slow at busy times so another bar person would be good. Evening meals seem mainly pre prepared/mass produced but just OK. The breakfasts were excellent each time with good service by Vanessa. I would be happy to stay there again if the standard continues to improve as is the intention I understand.

Room Tip: The striking clock opposite front rooms stops striking at midnight and resumes at 6 a.m. It's qu...

Read other reviews on this hotel..... yes the decor is tired but it has a 'lived in' feeling. We were in a family room (that was all that was available) and it was clean, spacious and warm. Staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty of room for clothes etc. Not the sort of place you will spend weeks at a time in Lampeter but a nice base to visit the coast towns of Aberaeron, Newquay and both places are lovely and quiet this time of year. Food in the Black Lion was good.... many locals appeared to eat in the evenings there so that is always a good sign in my opinion.....parking for cars at the rear of the hotel... yes new decor and a bit of painting will improve the place no end but it is clean with large oak beams all over the hotel...good nights sleep too....

Having stayed there for work it has got to be one of the worst the TV had only two channels the walls and ceiling had cracks through them and the town hall bell rang through the night. That said the bedding was clean even if the carpet wasn't the bathroom is spacious and everything is accessible from there I doubt I would stay here again through choice however I could see why someone would. I feel a bit sorry for the place and the staff this has the potential to be a fabulous hotel but has just been neglected and really makes me think again about brains the brewery who own it whom I have always held in high regard until this experience. The staff do a good job but without investment they will always struggle with bad reviews.

We stayed here while visiting Lampeter. We found the staff friendly and helpful. The room was okay, with what once was a very nice décor. It had however seen better days. The bed was very firm and for some people perhaps too firm. It was clean however, even though several aspects of the room were in need of repair (real as well as cosmetic). There was a section of the ceiling which had previously had a leak, and while repaired, it had not been repainted or papered. There were also other small breakages in the bathroom. Once again the staff were lovely, and the price was fair for what we received in bed and breakfast.

While I wouldn't rush back to stay here, it doesn't mean I wouldn't stay here again. Overall 3 1/2 out of 5.
