“This was a pleasant surprise. The hotel...”

This was a pleasant surprise. The hotel is clean, quiet, and the staff are friendly. The food in the restaurant is OK, and reasonably priced.

The fitout looks like early 90's - bland, inoffensive, old but clean and functioning.

We bought takeaway from the Chinese restaurant a few doors up, and it was so bad that we threw all £20 worth in the bin. The hotel kindly reopened their kitchen to prepare us a decent meal.

I was delighted with our choice of this place to stay in Lampeter. The cost was incredibly good for such a large, well proportioned room. Of course there are always minor gripes - one non-working lightbulb, temperamental remote control etc but these were minor matters.

The room was really comfortable and set above the main pub which was no problem - at least mid-week. The pub itself was the best we tried in Lampeter. The Ivy Bush pub was the second best. The other two on the main street had a distinct air of menace about them!

The breakfast we paid for separately and was very good too.

One really strange thing to comment on - is this place haunted? I just seemed aware that there were presences - quite a few - in our room on the first night and something crashed in the bathroom. I got up and there was nothing. Went back to bed and a string of really disturbing images flashed though my mind. I told whatever it was that I was not scared and to leave. I sensed nothing on the second night. I mentioned this to my friend two days later and he sensed almost exactly the same thing on that night.

Stayed at the Black Lion for one night for business. Took public transport there and back to London. Takes a good part of the day to get there, but the countryside is beautiful. The hotel is on the main street and the bus comes just outside the door. The inn is naturally also a pub and serves a lovely breakfast for about 7 pounds. Too much food for one person, so share it. When we arrived, our room reservation was lost, but they had a double bedroom available. The room was very warm on the cold day, too warm for sleeping, so we had to open the window. Furnishings are a bit dated, like staying with your gran, but that is part of the charm. Bed was comfy. Had a full bath with plenty of hot water. We were on the top floor, so lots of stairs. Clock rings night and day and street is a bit noisy in the morning. We were in the front of the hotel, so if it bothers you, ask for a room in the back. The town has a fantastic Indian restaurant, the best of our trip, just down the street. Lovely town, friendly people.

I've never been in a dirtier hotel room. The carpets hadn't been swept for weeks or possibly months, but bed and bathroom were fine. Decor is fifties British seaside. Service is annoyed. Cooked beakfast is very good.

Evening food and beer downstairs seemed very good, although I deferred.

A hotel run by a brewery (SA Brains), enough said... Boy, this place could be good if someone could be bothered...
